09 R3 wouldn't start, then it did later

Ok weird thing happened today. I was driving, pulled over to park. Then, got back in the car 5 minutes later and tried to start her and she wouldn't. Didn't turn over or anything. When I tried to start the tachometer went up to 9k and then back down and then all the lights went out as if the battery got unplugged. Everything else would still work though. So I left it, looked around the engine bay to make sure nothing was shorting and then went to try and start her and she fired right up. Running normal again. I have no idea what happened...

Thanks for any insight on this one,

Shumster

could be a hot start happens to mine sometimes dunno why it happens...

Thanks, I just searched that. Damn, now i'm worried. Maybe i'll go running off for a compression test now.

Well if it didn't turn at all, not even the starter, that has nothing to do with compression. Since your gauge cluster did some weird stuff, I'd say maybe the security system or immobilizer?

A compression test is always a good thing to get tested but this sounds more like an electrical issue,
could be something simple as cleaning your battery terminals and clamps.

Ok I see. Ya, as soon as I turned to try and start it the tach went crazy then all the lights would go out as if the battery had been disconnected. No noise at all. Just weird. Put it back to the on position and dash lights/radio ect would come back on as normal. It just freaked out when trying to turn to start. Everything seems fine now though. So I have no idea.

Also, really appreciate the help guys. Thanks a lot. I'm gonna go and clean the terminals and such.

The gauge cluster doing a full sweep when you turn on the car means that the supply voltage to the electrical system is low. Either due to a bad battery, low battery, or poor electrical connections.

Happened to me a bunch when i relocated a lightweight battery

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm happy that low compression has been ruled out. I suppose what's bothering me is as to why it started up fine after like 5 minutes? Any ideas on why it would go from acting up to starting fine 5 minutes later having not touched anything?

Thanks

It's probably a bad battery. I had a similar issue where it wouldn't start and the battery was only a bit over a year old but it ended up being the battery. Hopefully you have a warranty on it so you can get it replaced.
