TailLights

Hey so I have a spider in my passenger side tail light, and I know that you can open them cause their ultrasonically welded. So I figure ill just replace the tail light with a new one. Does anyone know if i can use my exsisting lock on my trunk? Or do i have to use the lock from the new light I am putting in?

Rotr8 12-06-2012 03:09 PM

the lock does not come off with the tail light. the tail light just has a whole that is a pass through.

Take the bulbs out and shake him out lol

shadycrew31 12-06-2012 03:43 PM

Screw that... a spider in the taillight is freaking dope, leave that ish in there.

The series 2 lights dont have a whole where you can shake the spider out from I already checked. I was thinking I would take out the light and just shake the spider all the way to the top corner.

if you replace the light, ill take the old one off your hands.

I want to bake the lense off of one for fun.

It can't be done, the unit is sonically sealed.

The only solution is to cut it open and epoxy it back together.

eh whatever, end result is the plastic off of the housing.

I want to see how close a S1 lens lines up with the S2 housing, then make modifications to mimic the S2 lens bulging.

or just fabricate my own lens.. Out of all of the install issues, the protruding lens is what makes the tails an eyesore on a S1. If thats slimmed down then hopefully there will be better fitment on S1's.

but im not about to pay retail or close to retail on a set for something that might not work.

Good luck... you are gonna end up wasting all kinds of money.

I also had a spider in my driver side tail light. I bought my 2011 RX-8 R3 new and noticed the spider after about 6 months. The service rep at my dealer gave me a bunch of crap about it not being covered under warranty and gave me info for a Mazda3. Said that there was a drain/plug to allow condensation to escape, was very rude and had no clue what he was talking about. :nono: I did some more research and took the light off myself in order to see if there is any way to shake it out.

I came back to the dealer and spoke to the Parts guy. He was much nicer. I had the part off the car and showed him how there is no way in hell that this got in after the car was assembled. He ended up ordering a new tail light and swapping it out with me. I got a brand new light and he sent the spider light back to Mazda as a defective part. I had to remove and replace the tail light myself but it is really easy to do in 5 minutes with a wrench and a screwdriver. Mine was driver side light, so no key hole.

Take it off and go talk to your Parts Manager. If you are really nice maybe he will feel your pain and help you out.

1 S2 tail light
1 S1 tail light

a sheet of acrylic to vacuum form a new lens.

epoxy / clay / whatever i can mold and then vacuum form.

not expensive whatsoever

agreed, if its materials your familiar with its about the same cost as buying a spare set of lights off ebay.

EricB 12-11-2012 03:22 PM

the hardest and most expensive part is sourcing a S2 tail light.

other than that, and like what rotr8 said.. its all about material familiarity.

at the end of the day, its a custom one off piece that is comprable in price to a spare set.

Rotr8 12-11-2012 06:07 PM

yeah the only other legit option is RE Amemiya's new set, and I think those are around $1800 before shipping, anything custom made(made well) should be about a third in price
the hardest decision I've gone through is whether to do a set like the S2s lights that will fit that area are harder to find than you may think. Or to do a set like the new BMW tail lights.

mazmart is having a sale on oem parts atm i believe. dont quote me on it, but the number 565 is in my head when i think about it.

EDIT: 585 each...
http://www.partswebsite.com/mazmart/...137&type=parts

big discount from 750 each

This is a project that is tackle-able for me, but im not going gun-ho and buying a new assy to play/fuck around with. If rotr8 wants this assy then you can have it, you are more likely to finish the project with your access to materials and what not.
