Black Mica and Dr.ColorChip
 

So after seeing Phren's video on using Dr.ColorChip on his VR, I decided to give it a shot and see how it fares on a darker color car.

Had a pretty nasty rock chip on my hood from a few months ago. Heard some good stuff about this product, and considering the dealership wanted 300 bucks to repair the freaking 1/4 dime chip, 45 bucks was well worth a try. Only reason i needed this touched up was to prevent rusting in the future as it seems to have gone almost to the metal.

Using the sealant to clean up the excess, you can already see that it filled in a bit of the chip, but more layers needed

Honestly this stuff did a pretty good job. Its a glue/paint material so thats why its "safe" to use. It will be interesting to see how this stuff holds up through changes in weather. It could def use another coat or two, but I want to see how it cures over the next few days.

For 45 bucks its not a bad product. Works best on tiny chips, as larger chips require more time, and more product.

Just went and took a look and it cured quite nicely. I will have to take a pic tomorrow in the AM since it would be too dark now.

Would you recommend this for lighter colors, as in Ti Gray? And what about un-even chips? Some of my chips are kind of de-formed, like the rock hit the paint, cratering the paint almost and leaving some sort of lip/bur.

Maybe some light wet sanding before starting the Dr. Colorchip process?

I dont know about lighter colors. Phren tried it on his VR and if I remember correctly he wasn't too happy with the results, so I can only assume the lighter you go the less benefits. Actually its kind of funny because when you look at the website for the product all you see is dark colored cars. As far as uneven chips, the pics above are of a chip that was a good chunk gone. I basically applied, let sit, added the sealant, and repeated the process about 5 - 6 times to fill in the hole to a flat finish. Came out pretty nice. I will post pics of how it looks now that it had a night to cure.
