Amazon Amazon

Or similar. There are many on Amazon. + DashCommand or Torque app for your phone. Pretty sure they work with iOS and Android.

Crappy tire will be at least $60.

Yea I was thinking that price range online so I'm not surprised but it's good to get it confirmed. My light came on and I just added a midpipe last weekend, so it's either drag it to the dealer and have them run the test... And probably charge me a 100 or something of this.

Not sure which is a better option actually.

You likely have the P0420 cat below threshold.
I use the Torque App on my phone.

Yea I looked that up, isn't some special adaptor needed? It can't possibly be a USB or anything could it?

I had a hjs cat on the midpipe so it can't be the fault of the converter. Perhaps a sensor then?

Then they put it in they said the oxygen sensor was very out there and I had little clearance.

The device I linked on Amazon is that adaptor. It connects to the car's diagnostic plug under the steering wheel and to the phone by bluetooth.

For a quick check, you can stop by any garage, many will check the codes free. It takes 2 seconds.

Also most auto parts stores will check them.

Depends on what you want.

If you just want to read the codes, I think some of them are $30.

I have one that can give live data readout and do alternator/battery test that cost me $100+. That was before I knew Bluetooth readers are a thing.

That said, I think some of the Bluetooth ones are picky and won't work on certain cars. My buddy bought a Bluetooth one not long ago and he says he was trying to read the codes or whatever on a GTI, and it doesn't work.

I'll get that app and the wire. Good to have for later.

Anyway, brought it there, I've had enough work there done that the service manager didn't bother charging, gave a p0420 like Cajun said. The manager there does seem to know his stuff, suggested removing the light and seeing if it returns. Thoughts?

P0420 is basically the car complaining that the catalytic converter isn't working as well as it should.

Does your new midpipe have a catalytic converter in it?

If not, the code will come back.

If so, the code may or may not come back depending on whether the cat is decent quality (read: > US$500) or some cheap part (read: < US$500).

He said he has an HJS.

Yeah, clear it and see what happens.

Meanwhile, do you smell anything when you stand behind the car?

Nothing other than that faint egg whiff that everyone without fail mentions with the midpipe. It's a novelty, but other than that I noticed nothing.

My only question is why the manager told me there's limited clearance with the oxygen sensor. I stuck myself down to the floor to look, I see nothing jutting out at all.

No surprise really it came back, I moved the topic here to hopefully catch the attention of anyone else with personal experience on it. Although I have a feeling it's common. I could be wrong.

You seem like a nice person, but the issue is that this is all beyond your current level of technical understanding. You just need someone with the proper tools and service manual to work through the basic checklist procedure provided there to determine what the real problem is.
