Catalytic converter..

Anyone swapped theirs out for a hiflow or just completely removed it or something?

DarkLord7854 01-19-2010 09:35 PM

Says it's suitable for race cars, would it be worth it to put it on my street-only 8?

TeamRX8 01-20-2010 03:43 AM

not me. that was swoope, I poo-poo'd it when he first got, but it's lasted him well

my latest cat has several times more flow area, more flow per cpi, premium catalyst materials, and is rated for 400+ BHP, but the negative is it cost 6x more than the Davesport unit

.

michaelsk8er 01-20-2010 07:20 AM

Does that have O2 sensors? Looks to me like it does not, especially since it is universal.

And I was the one to tell Swoope about it.

If your midpipe doesn't already have it, a new bung will have to be welded on to accept the 2nd O2 sensor.

it's a universal cat converter only that's available in several tube sizes, no piping or anything else

Nemesis8 01-20-2010 01:36 PM

Dave called me to confirm my pipe size prior to shipping - real nice guy to talk to. Mine measured 3.25" inside diameter where I need to weld it.

Jedi54 01-20-2010 01:44 PM

Nemesis: what pipe are you welding it into?
I've considered cutting up my RP High Flow and possibly having a davesport Cat welded into it.

I'm going to be doing the same thing.

In a S2 the O2 bung is in the CAT itself, not the midpipe. It has front O2 sensor at the end of the header and a rear O2 in the CAT itself. No idea if you can move it outside the CAT without a CEL though. I'm still running stock but I do remember the layout from my header install.

alnielsen 01-20-2010 02:03 PM

Yes you can. That is how it is setup on the aftermarket items.

TeamRX8 01-20-2010 02:09 PM

3.25" inside diameter? :squint:

That makes no sense ..... :dunno:

The OE converter has two catalyst bricks with a space between them and the O2 sensor reads the exhaust gas in this space. The aftermarket cat is a single catalyst brick. Putting a bung after it is the same as the OE setup as far as the rear O2 sensor is concerned, it's just that there isn't a second catalyst brick after it takes the exhaust reading.

Let me check again tonight, because that does sound odd. Jedi - I will be working on a Racing Beat straight race midpipe.

Jedi54 01-20-2010 03:02 PM

very nice Nemesis: can't wait to hear what you think of this cat.
Where's swoope been? Maybe I'll harass him for some more info on these things. While I like my RP cat, I am on my second one and am not sure how much longer this one will last. Some people have great luck with them, others don't.

Al: if you get around to doing this, let me know what the pipe diamater is, would ya? Or if I beat you to it, I'll send the info to you.

TeamRX8 01-20-2010 03:06 PM

That's 3" OD, so the cat should be 3" ID if it's a slip in and weld on fit

why are all the S1 owners discussing this in the S2 forum?

I have the blown rp cat and hipo cat sitting around. I just haven't done anything with it yet.

Swoope did something different with his setup. He put the cat to the rear of the midpipe in hopes that the exhaust gas would cool slightly and possibly lengthen the life of the cat. I'm not sure that is necessary with this cat. It will also require an extension cable to reach the new location for the last O2 sensor.

It's 3.25" ID. My camera is at the office, so look tomorrow for a scaled pic.
