Bennett Built LS Ignition Review
 

Alright here is my review of the Bennett Built Performance LS ignition kit (I know, I know, they are D585 coils, but they call them LS coils on their website).

I posted an inquiry about these coils in the fall of 2017. A lot of forum members advised me to steer clear of them for a couple of reasons. First they cited that Bennett Built Performance had a reputation for poor customer service and poor delivery times, second that this ignition kit was a copy of another well known ignition kit and that BBP was stealing their design and their R&D, and third that it would be in inferior product.

Now I am not here to say I told you so or to bash anyone's opinions or company. My simple inquiry already stirred up enough controversy. I truly believe that many of the forum members were only trying to look out for me in my best interest. I am here to tell you after about one year and over 5000 miles I have not had a single problem out of my BBP Ls coil kit.

Customer service from Bennett Built Performance was outstanding. They stayed in close contact with me through Facebook messenger and delivered the product quicker than I anticipated.

Installation was a bit of a pain and I did have to cut a clip for my main wiring harness to get it to fit. This is due to the staggered positioning of the coils, which was one of my main concerns before buying the product. Other companies that build their brackets in a straight line should be easier to install. This in my mind is the biggest drawback to the kit.

Performance thus far has been outstanding. My car only had 14,226 miles on it when I installed the kit. I honestly did not know how a rotary sounds when it idles while hot and thought their was something wrong with the car and I did get a flashing CEL once, under hard acceleration, with the stock coils. I installed them for more of peace of mind and since my car had sat around a lot (8 year old car with 9000 miles on it). After installing the kit the car really screamed more and pulled harder at the top of the rev range and I have yet to have a CEL. Like I said I have had zero issues and have put over 5000 miles on the kit.

Overview I was low on cash at the time and needed an affordable and reliable part for my car. I believe in free market capitalism and competition and Bennett Built Performance in my mind offered a superior product in terms of value. You can pay more and will most likely have an easier time installing the kit, but I could not justify it for and extra $200 especially when that is almost double the cost of the kit.

Glad it worked out for you -- hopefully they will serve you well for a long time.

I don't believe the BBP system is any more of a clone than the other well-regarded system that it is claimed to have copied. D585's have been a popular swap on cars requiring more stable ignition, as early as 2006, even within the GM V8 family and RX-7 owners. I applaud the quality of the other guys, and their reputation speaks to that as well as their customer service, however, merely applying the same part to the same platform, doesn't make BBP intellectual property thieves. They are competitors that took the same part made by a third-party, and applied it to a car known to have an ignition weakness. Their likeness is competition, in the most ideal form, a lower-cost offering. The other guy chooses not to lower their price to compete, and that is okay, likely making business just fine as-is. As you noted, the other option is superior from a design standpoint for not having to mess with the harness, better fitment. Valuable details like that can attribute to the higher price of entry, but at the end function is similar, which may be enough for someone budget constrained but still concerned for the well-being of their car.

I've tried to get the BennetBuilt ignition kit installed but the car will now not start. Was running fine before this. We have made sure all the coils are connected to the correct plugs and gone through the ECU reset etc. But still no luck.





Does anyone have any advice on this? The only thing were not 100% sure on is if the harness adapters are wired up correctly. We've followed the instructions and connected the longest one to the front bottom coil as explained in the instructions etc. But still nothing. I've added the photos incase anyone can see something else!





Each of the leads does have a different colourd wire. (Green, white, yellow/green and white/blue) does anyone know which order they are connected to the ignition coils in? Photos below.

So when you trace the leads from the stock Mazda harness, thru the aftermarket harness to the coil and then on to the spark plug, does it follow the routing in the picture?

That's the exact image we went by. Yes thanks. Turns out it was flooded from getting the cables the wrong way around originally. Finally got it up and running now though. Thanks for the help

I also have the Bennet coil kit and my car went into immobilizer security and the engine fuse would blow.
The solution I found is not to ground the coils to the battery as the instructions state. I grounded mine out on the crossmember and it fixed the problem.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just finished the install on mine and followed their instructions and didn't have any issues. I was worried about the ground wire, but didn't have that issue.
