Aftermarket S1 exhaust on a S2...verifying info

From my searching of threads - Seems as though a S1 exhaust can be installed on a s2 with possibly 2, 3 or 4 polyurethane hangers which drop the tips 1" lower and keep the exhaust from moving side to side

1) Is this correct? Am I missing anything?

2) Does the R3 rear bumper lend itself to more complications?

I know that exhausts on the RX8 are more for sound more than anything else and possibly weight reduction.

The Racing Beat is heavier than stock system by 6-10 lbs from my searches.

I am leaning towards a Fujistubo Legalis-R system for S1 and BHR midpipe as my final setup on my R3. If anyone has any constructive criticism, please let me know. I will do a full DIY when I get them.

Thanks!

That is what I have read too. I just ordered an exoticspeed r2-t and it is supposed to come in today. I'll probably be doing my install this weekend and I'll let you know how things go. I have a 2010 r3.

I personaly got 5 hangers, 4 for the muffler and one for the extention pipe, the angle the muffler bolts up to the extention pipe would put alot of stress if you dont lower it as well

blacksheep515 09-12-2012 01:47 PM

Thanks for the reply. My fujitsubo should ship today per seller, I am excited for it. I may wait and order the BHR mid-pipe and do it all at once. Do keep me updated

What hangers mounts are you using to compensate? Or are you going to bend the hangers on the exhaust itself. In theory, that should work as well.

Thr Fuji tips are smaller and thinner, so I am hoping this helps with clearance as well. I will post back here as well, but do keep me updated as well. Thanks!

Thanks, did you get special poly ones? Else, what kind and from where. I stiill need to pick these up and am shopping around.

paimon.soror 09-12-2012 01:52 PM

I only need 3 hangers (i could use a 4th but I got a 3 pack for cheap). I am using oem for the extension pipe. didnt have any issues there.

ChikaFreak 09-12-2012 07:04 PM

Right now i think i am going to weld some extensions onto the current hangers. shouldnt be to hard hopefully.

can you guys share a link to the hangers you are discussing?

Thanks.

blacksheep515 09-12-2012 09:44 PM

Paimon found these and posted in a thread a while back. It allows to drop the hanger down an inch or so..I would suggest not welding to the hanger, you impact any and all warranty on it with that sort of modification IMHO,

exactly what I got

wazup_shorty 09-13-2012 07:41 AM

I use one on my extention pipe, the spring bolt use to hit on the shield because it was too tight

So my exhaust came Wednesday..... dented! Stupid ups! Idk what I'm going to do. The shipper has the package insured but I don't want to wait another three weeks for a new one. Exotic speed has already had this on back order for me for 2 months.

blacksheep515 09-14-2012 12:13 PM

Oh man :( - Sorry to hear that. What a hassle. I would get it replaced by seller, though.

I hope I don't have the same issue. Mine does not get here till next week :(

So where exactly is the issue with the S1 exhaust fitment on an S2? Is it:

1) The S1 midpipe has different curvature in comparison to the S2 midpipe, OR

2) The S1 axlepipe has different curvature in comparison to the S2 axlepipe.

Or maybe a combination of both? I've been looking at these threads for a while but I just can't seem to find which part in the exhaust line is the part that is causing the misalignment. My guess is the midpipe, but really I have no idea. Everyone just replies "it doesn't fit quite right" and I was hoping to get the the bottom of the issue.

moreso #2. An S1 exhaust is designed to sit higher on the car, especially the tips which need to clear the bumper shrouds. If you look at an S1 exhaust vs an S2 exhaust, the tips sit significantly higher relative to the muffler than an S2 does. When you try to apply the exhaust to an S2, it causes the intermediate pipe to sit lower than it is supposed to. This is only an issue if your car is lowered. In my case it caused clearance issues where i would scrape the intermediate pipe of my TXS exhaust on serious bumps in the road.

LiveWire 05-19-2013 12:10 AM

Thanks for the quick response. Also damn, this is looking more and more like a huge fiasco. Did you have the extended hangers when you scraped? Also how much lower than stock was your ride height (if you don't mind me asking)?

ChikaFreak 05-19-2013 09:18 AM

Also when I fit the exoticspeed, one tip stuck out about an inch more than the other tip. This was because the s1 exhaust was hung lower on my s2. It might not be a big deal for most ppl but I got the burnt blue fade tips and it looked really unprofessional.

Yep, same happened with my TXS exhaust

jammcc8284 07-27-2013 08:51 AM

I've got a series 1 b&b mid pipe on mine with a custom catback exhaust. I had the same issue though when the stock cat back was on. I believe the mid pipes are curved differently. The cat back didn't seal to the mid pipe when I put it on which is why I went custom.

Brian_fd3s 07-30-2013 12:17 AM

I bought a full s1 exhaust with resonated midpipe used and just cut the tips off about an inch from the muffler and welded them back on so they sat in the proper location. Nothing rubs and tips don't sag or angle down

wazup_shorty 08-02-2013 12:12 PM

Just for info, I had sold my Txs midpipe to a freind with a 04 S1 and the mid pipe flange doesnt line up properly with the extension pipe, and it doesnt seem like the muffler flange as been moved either. just a heads up, but weird thing is that Its suposed to be a S1 parts lol.

unknown__Disciple 08-04-2013 09:34 AM

kind of weird that those who had to modify an exhaust have one side sticking out more than the other. doesnt do that for me and I measured each side too.

I found good deal on used Racing Beat S1 REV8 catback locally. Has anyone been able to make this work on S2 car that is going to get lowered to ~13.5" ride height. Will using the stock axle-pipe instead of supplied one help with fitment? Racing beat states this on their web site: "2009+ RX-8 exhaust systems differ with regards to the positioning of the outlet tips and are NOT compatible with earlier RX-8 models.". I do wonder can exhaust shop just bend the tip pipes to achieve same thing that using longer exhaust hangers would accomplish?

or am I better of putting HKS single (will also save weight) - are there clearance issues on lowered S2 car?

Can anyone post some pictures of S1 catbacks installed on S2 cars

i can tell you having a S2 that had a S1 style exhaust on it before. I wouldn’t waste your time trying to make it fit. You can stretch the hangers to somewhat make it work. But the tips are going to be still slightly off. You’ll also burn or have to trim part of your exhaust shroud on one side. What I’d do is sell the one you got, and then get a S2 version instead. I have it and it’s a great exhaust, you won’t be sorry having spent the money.
