im not really sure what this is but im guessing from its name that when you drive you spin out and your car back tires hop a bit? if not then what is that called and sway bars can get rid of the correct?

I'm not sure how to get rid of it, but if you just let the wheels spin off the line, they hop up and down rather violently. When I launched my car at the drag strip, it damn near shook a couple teeth loose...and it wasn't even a good run! :(

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 01:05 AM

what suspension work can be done to fix this, anyone know?

Lock & Load 02-19-2005 01:39 AM

Sway bars at rear will definetely help wheel hop, and lowered suspension .

cheers

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 01:41 AM

trying to stay away from springs but will try the sway bars........

Lock & Load 02-19-2005 01:50 AM

Racing beat puts out a great set of sway bars in your part of the world.

cheers
michael

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 01:56 AM

are they very pricey?

oxyg2n 02-19-2005 02:32 AM

about 150ish for rear and 170ish for front

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 02:34 AM

that's not bad....one a month.

LiL BenNy 02-19-2005 07:04 AM

hahah exactly jenkins... i was gonna do that... but double cost of shipping! so i guess ill wait till i have enough to pay for them both at once lol

RX4life 02-19-2005 07:33 AM

swaybars help for sure.. i was under the impression that the LSD is suppose to eliminate as much ho as possible .. smoother power to the wheels..

but im sure for a fact that the best way to eliminate weel hop is by getting a lower tie bar. or lower strut bar or somethin...

its available for the SVT focus .. i use to own and alot of peeps said that it significantly reduced wheel hop..

cretinx 02-19-2005 01:22 PM

Uh,

all of the things you guys are mentioning will make wheel hop WORSE because they're going to STIFFEN the rear, meaning its less soft, less absorption, more hopping! A more aggressive LSD will damn near kill you on launches, trust me.

All the stuff you've suggested is great for handling, but remember, you want stiffness for handling - you want softness for launching.

You want HUGE honkin rear tires, preferably thicker than stock diameter.

TooBIG 02-19-2005 01:48 PM

I have the MS suspension. (shocks, springs, sway bars)
Wheel hop pulling second is much worse now.. so I pull a more sedate second shift.

LiL BenNy 02-19-2005 01:51 PM

wtf so what do i do to fix this. some say sway bars others say makes it worse...

superscout03 02-19-2005 03:34 PM

It is your tires that are the main problem in this situation. Well its not really a problem. To fix this go with a diffrent style tire other than RE040 potenza, Tread pattern and wear make a big difference. I use Federal SS-595 super steel 245-40-ZR18 all the way around.

cretinx 02-19-2005 04:36 PM

Get some Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s or Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s in 245/45/18 for the rear only.

BaneSpirit 02-19-2005 04:47 PM

Or, you could just keep doing it till your stock Protenzas are bald in the rear and then you would be on the "racing slicks" used by many honda civic's. ;)

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 05:27 PM

so it's only a matter of tires?????????? What about a different spring?

mike0615 02-19-2005 10:44 PM

this site pretty much covers allot on suspension turning. http://www.se-r.net/car_info/suspension_tuning.html

its a site for nissians, but it can pretty much be used for any car. hopefully its something u can use.

jenkins-crew 02-19-2005 10:57 PM

cool thanks, that will help.

Vaillant 02-21-2005 03:15 PM

I believe Charles Hill found a new thicker rear sway bar helped eliminate the rear wheel hop at the strip. You could PM him for more details.

jenkins-crew 02-21-2005 04:50 PM

Sweet I will do that.....

Shamblerock 02-21-2005 09:31 PM

I spoke to 3 Mazda specialists. They all thought I was barking up the wrong tree to think that thicker sways would eliminate wheel hop. They all agreed it would improve handling though. They also all agreed that you have to get stiffer shocks so theat the tired would not go up and down.

However, Charles Hill knows what he's talking about and it seemed to work perfectly for him. I'm going with the RB sway bars in any event come the spring for improved cornering but I will not expect it eliminate the wheel hop. That way if it does, bonus!

This is a mystery indeed.

BigOLundh 02-22-2005 01:18 AM

Disable the DSC/TCS and you will see a huge improvement. I get a little spin on my launches but no violent "wheel hopping"

Not only does the rear bar eliminate wheelhop, the front/rear package really cuts down on body roll around turns. If you are willing/able, you may wish to consider the R.B. springs, as well. They lower the height about 1/2-3/4" and are only 10% firmer than stock. They are also designed to work with the factory dampers. My family has no problem driving around with me and my girlfriend actually likes it better. Definitely a worthwhile mod and fairly easy to do with hand tools. The springs you may wish to leave to a pro unless you have a spring compressor.

BTW, I am running mid-12's and still no wheelhop on ordinary surfaces.

I think I will go ahead and do this.
