Tein basic coilovers, or KOni shocks with racing beat springs. hey guys i am cought between thease two options i dont know what to do so if u guys dont mind can u help me decide. What would be better for me with ease of use and for auto x.

I have the Tein Basic setup, put it on Monday for the weekends Auto-X.
VERY stiff, particularly at the back. Any passenger back there will arrive two-inches shorter! :D They are brutal for everyday driving, but excellent for cornering! ..and as soon as the event is over they are off! S |
I have rb springs with stock shocks and I love em'. Paired with koni shocks I think it would be a awsome combo.

I went with Tein Basics, only because its about the same amount you pay for springs and struts, so you might as well get something adjustable that is perfectly matched together.

so the TEIN basics are stiff?
the few threads on them all say they aren't that stiff - but i know something like that is subjective ... great. |
Yeah, thats the first time I've heard anyone say they were overly stiff. I guess as soon as I get mine install along with my RB sways, I'll truly know. Do you have them on the lowest setting?

(I'm not the worlds' best wrencher, but.....) unless I got them upside down or something, they are set at the 'reference' point - 1" of thread showing, as per instructions....

Chiming in, but my 8 is an Evo 8. I was in the same boat, go with matched setup, or coil-overs. I ended up with the Tein Flex, only because I wanted the camber plates for the front. Now, when I open track, I can adjust my camber, based on tire wear. Something you may or may not need for AutoX. I don't think the Basics have this feature. Just a thought.....

the tein basics are really nice but i cant adjust them at all i can adjust is height. But with teh konis i can adjust ride which is nice and i can be lowered a bit.

I have the Basics right now and the rear spring rate is a little high (read bouncy) compared to the JICs I swapped them for. If you are looking for body control and flatter cornering, the Basic's higher spring rates will get you there. And no more wheel hop. Don't get me wrong, the Konis are good dampers. I had them on my Eclipse and loved them. Just remember that you have to remove the rears from the car to make an adjustment which is a big pain in the butt. |

Went from springs only (H&R) to Tein basic,
Love them! Car feels very balanced and planted, squat, dive and roll are almost none existent. Tanabe sways help out here to. I would have wanted the more controllable Tein flex set but needed more $$$ To do so :) To me ride height adjustability was more important than the shock settings. Otherwise I would have gone with the Koni's. Talk to Phil from dpeweb, he's a forum vendor and he has both on his RX-8's. |

I'm auto-x'ing on the Basics and they are fine. With the Basics don't throw on a big front sway bar, stay with stock. The spring rates are enough to control body movement. I have had a slight understeer issue which I was able to adjust out with tire presures. I'm going to try a little toe out in the front and see if that will cure it. And if that doesn't work I will try a new rear bar. |

I have thought about this same question a lot. And I have decided to go with the tein springs and koni shocks. heres my thinking. 1- I drive on the street mostly. I want that adjustment on the dampening. we are talking about modifing the rear a little so you can adjust the rear shocks without having to remove them(sorta like the front) This car dang sure needs more damping at over 80mph! 2- ride height is not important to me as i havent gotten to the stage of wanting to do corner weights etc. to dang much trouble! I do recognize that performance wise it is a real good thing but hey Im not THAT serious. 3- i cant afford the tein flex setup! 4- I was going with the RB springs but i cant justify their cost. ($85 more bucks than tein) 5- koni's rep is great and they never wear out! So my end set up will be the RB sways/end links(already have) Teing H springs and the koni's. THEN maybe i can get some decent tires! which will do more for you on this car than suspension! olddragger |

Was a passenger in an 8 with Tein basic & RB sways.
Did not feel all that though or rough to me but as I said, I wasn’t driving the car. He sins then removed them for the MS springs and shocks, Knowing he wanted a smoother ride. PM me and I can give you his screen name... |
so the MS springs are smoother? . i heard they were pretty stiff,

Has anyone done Koni shocks + Tein S-techs yet? I have S-techs that I bought quite a while ago, and they've been collecting dust, I might as well do the shocks too.

the Tein Basic springs are almost twice as stiff as the RB springs, they're really two different things entirely, the Mazdaspeed springs are kind of between the two

just get the basics.. its cheap.. cheaper to install... matched spirngs and shocks... and you will get height adjustibility as an advantage...simple!
i dont know why anyone would want to get RB springs anyways? personal opinion it is a waste of money and doesnt do much at all, 20% stiffer come on?? and it only lowers .5 inches.. thats toooo civilized for the aftermarket world! but i guess its perfect for the oldies .. :spank: |
