Sunlight Silver and Silver Calipers

Since it was a fantastic day here in Houston, I decided to paint my calipers. Couldn't decide on Silver or Black so I bought a spray can of each color. Used VHT from Autozone but did not spray it directly on the brake caliper. Instead I sprayed the paint in a small plastic bowl then used a brush. Worked like a charm. Of course I spent about 5 minutes cleaning with brake cleaner. Only have about 2100 miles so the brakes were not that dirty.

With wheel

The whole car.

Well done! Simple but elegant!

DemonRX-8 02-08-2004 12:33 AM

Looks just like my car - except the silver calipers! Looks good. I may have to try something like this on my car. Did you paint them while they were still on the disc?

XDEEDUBBX 02-08-2004 12:49 AM

looks really clean...GJ

yes, I painted them while still on the car. Used my wifes art brush. expensive but I needed a good square tip for the edges. Took only about 7-8 minutes for each caliper. Now I'll have to get a special wheel brush so I can reach the caliper better when washing.

I envy that great weather - bloody freezing here on the east coast. Great job...nice idea to spray the paint in a bowl!

Its actually been pretty wet and rainy here in Houston the last couple of months but everytime I hear someone complain, I remind them how worse the weather is up north and northeast. I'd take rain over snow, sleet or ice anyday.

Here are the materials I used. Spent more time taking the wheels off.

Great idea with the paint brush, J-Mac!! I plan on doing the same thing. :)

question

Could this be done without removing the wheels - espeically since you used a brush? Seems you could reach the parts that are easily seen.

Psychofox 02-15-2004 03:48 PM

very nice

RX8FanMan 02-15-2004 05:25 PM

looks sweet

Nice job jerrymac - in fact I liked your pics so I also painted my calipers silver today. Was a nice day in Southern MD and I decided to go for it. I used the Testors paint recommended by dcfc3s on another thread (enamel) but used a brush as you suggested. Looks good and I didn't have to take the caliper apart - not that it's that hard but more opportunity to !@#$ something up. I had a smaller brush so took a little longer but was surprised at the difference it made (I did the right side today - couple hours - left side tomorrow). I'll post pics when I get a chance but looks great (in my opinion) even on a Ti grey - actually matches the wheels more than the car. Even the wife was surprised at the difference!! Thanks for all the posts - helped a lot - wouldn't have done any of this without all the DIY pics, etc.

Look forward to seeing your pics.

Its been funny noticing peoples reacting to my wheels. They know something is different, very clean but cant seem to pinpoint it until I point out the calipers match the rims. Then they see it.

I thought about using Testors too but wasn't sure how it would hold up to the heat, my driving and 100+ degree summers here in Houston.

That's what I like about the silver - a little more subtle. Now I just need some decals to go with it. Here is the befor pic

Chris in MD 03-27-2004 02:40 PM

Here is the after pic. I also painted the hub high gloss black - mostly to match the rear hubs which I needed to do something with due to the rust on the cast iron portion.

Hopefully the testors will hold up - if not, the whole process wasn't that difficult - might even change colors if I get tired of the silver!!

nice. definitely a good idea
