stance coilovers help...

so i'm install my stance coilovers on my rear right now but notice that the top bolts that hold onto the tower is no aligned with the bottom parts of the trunk...has any stance guys had this problem? if so how do i fix it? i was thinking that i was possible to remove the top part of the coilover which holds onto tower bracket but i dont wanna mess anything up...so help stance guys?

9krpmrx8 03-25-2011 12:00 PM

Yeah when I installed Hoss-05's stance we had that problem. the bracket was actually mounted wrong from Stance and then we have to work on both sides a while to get the tops to line up.

There is no real answer, you just have to loosen things, move things, etc. to get everything to line up. I was/am not impressed with the Stance Coilovers at all, I have installed quite a few coilovers and the Stance were the only ones I had issues with.

Even now his car has a clunk and we are thinking the car has the wrong springs. I will be removing things to measure them.

TopGear8 03-25-2011 12:13 PM

The top bracket was mounted backwards... Just unbolt it, flip it, and you are good...Not that big of a deal.

unknown__Disciple 03-25-2011 12:24 PM

cool thanks...how come stance hasn't fixed this problem though? hasn't this been out for quite a while.?..oh and how hard is it to take off that top bracket of the coilover?

The proper spring length is 200mm. Anything less will cause the springs to bind and make that clunk, bottoming out sound. Many Stance owners, including myself, had this problem and needed to get new ones.

now ya'll making me worried about having bought these coilovers....

HockeyRX-8 03-25-2011 12:48 PM

The spring issue was addressed before, but for some reason they are still selling the coilovers with 175mm springs. If you bought them new, talk to the vendor you bought them from and get the right springs

I can vouch for this, once you get the proper springs on the rear the clunking will go away. Got mine sent to me for free as the vendor addressed the issue.

9krpmrx8 03-25-2011 01:26 PM

Yeah fixing the orientation of the top bracket is no big deal but getting the top bolt holes to line up still took some coercion.

The spring issue is just a pain the ass, I hope it is not that but I think it is because I have adjusted those bitches twice and the spring still clunks and rattles.

unknown__Disciple 03-25-2011 02:56 PM

^^^yeah having trouble with that right now...I'm almost done...just need to align the bolts to the tower bracket

REV-illusions 03-25-2011 04:36 PM

just installed a set of these on a buddies car last weekend. The biggest issue we had was with the rear towers with the adjusters. We could get them in, but the adjuster was hitting the sheet metal as the hole at the top wasn't quiet large enough to fit through properly. We ended up filing that down a bit and didn't have any problems since.

9krpmrx8 03-25-2011 04:39 PM

Getting the adjusters through the existing holes was a bitch but you shouldn't have to file or modify anything.

REV-illusions 03-26-2011 07:14 AM

We had to on both sides. We got them in and everything, but the knob was JUST big enough that it hit, so you couldn't make an adjustments, and the thing would squeak and clunk as you drove along as it would rub against the metal. Apparently it's a know thing and it's the price you pay for one size fits all brand components.

In any case, we dicked around with those damn coilovers for so long that by the time it came to enlarging that hole in the tower, we got both rear coils disconnected and out of the car in 15 minutes (I timed it) :)

putting mine in today finally, unfortunately I won't be installing my front sway bar as they (thmotorsports) forgot to send my front endlinks and have not done anything about it since reporting it with a picture of the invoice clearly stating it wasn't shipped a week ago.
Is there any way to tell beforehand that the springs are the wrong ones? I don't want to go through all the work (has anyone seen my trunk? take a look at my pics just to grasp how big a job this is lol) only to find out I too have the wrong stuff, judging from the response I'm getting with thmotorsports my trust and confidence in what I bought is diminishing, Adam sold me on the stance, I probably should have went with kw's from a different vendor as so far I'm not real stoked on missing endlinks and taking over a week to send me what I paid for.

Yes just measure the springs and make sure they are 200MM. If they are 175MM then they are the wrong ones.

canaryrx8 03-26-2011 08:27 AM

ahhh ok, cool, I could have probably figured that out reading a little more...but I've never been much of a morning person so... :D:

unknown__Disciple 03-26-2011 08:57 AM

think mine had the wrong springs..i get a clunk when going over the bump stops...i'm taking it to sal's auto shop today for them to check it out and verify....if i have to take them off again. im just gonna let sal's work on it cause it was too much of a pain in the ass the in the first place.

9krpmrx8 03-26-2011 09:04 AM

Yeah, I have read so many positive things about Stance coil overs and I never really had a reason to search for the negatives and yet when I did I found a ton of negatives. But, the important thing is that as a company, they fix any issues that do arise so that is great.

I just think there was a lot of hype and they got popular real fast so it is showing in their QC.

unknown__Disciple 03-26-2011 09:10 AM

yeah well, i'm a be calling dan at assault tech and see if he can help with my problem since i bought them from him

canaryrx8 03-26-2011 09:54 AM

add one more to the wrong size spring list, after seeng this thread I busted out the tape measure and the rears are less than 7 inches tall, according to google (lazy math ftw) 175mm= 6.9 inches, 200mm= 7.8, those springs are nowhere even close to 7.8, this coupled with not sending my endlinks when they were supposed too (and ignoring me about it) has me completely irritated, at this point I'm about 2cm's away from saying to hell with it and sending it all back. Just goes to show that no matter how carefully you research a company and its products, nothing is sacred anymore and while I know people make mistakes, there is no justification for not acting on those mistakes. (grr) :(

Yeah you would think if it is a known issue they would check the stock and make sure the right springs are included.

canaryrx8 03-26-2011 10:20 AM

yup, completely inexcusable, I would be jobless for what they get away with.

scottish 03-26-2011 03:43 PM

i see my buddy beat me to it (REV-illusions).there is an issue with the clearance of the rear adjusters but cured that with a stepped drill bit and a drimel.i still have some clunking from the rear but after reading this thread i checked the rear spring size and AHHH CRAP! you can add me to the list, i have the short springs too.i got mine from THmotorsport (adam)and i had no problems with them, they shipped to my door step in toronto canada in 3 days. unlucky canaryrx8 thats the problem from buying online vendors you cant tell if they have all of you order in stock or some of it unlucky.so i guess i will be shooting adam a e-mail about the short springs.

Dan@Assaultech 03-28-2011 08:42 AM

Thank you for making me aware of this guys, I will do my best to make sure everyone that has even the most minor issue will be taken care of and happy!!! Please just make me aware of this via email or a phone call. Stance is local to us here in Chicago so it wont be hard to fix these problems.

I use these coilovers on my 8.... and I have ZERO issues. Yeah back in the day we figured out that we need longer springs. So from that day on we always made sure that the 200mm spring was used. That made it all better. But it looks like someone put 175mm springs back in there on the last batch...I will get to the bottom of this...no worries.

There are no design flaws...just QC. And I will make sure this never happens. I helped to design these and know these coilovers very well. I used to do my own inspection on these and took a lot of care to make sure people were getting perfect sets.

I was having zero issues and the guys at stance made sure of the same thing....over time things got tighter and coilovers were needed to be made faster and more of them in a shorter amount of time...so that's probably what happened in this scenario. Something got overlooked and I trusted that Stance has taken care of it so stopped opening the boxes up to do a full inspection on them...since it took a lot of my time to do so.

Please contact me or call Stance directly to solve any issues. No one will be left behind, to deal with this on their own.
