Spare Tire

What type of spare tire does the RX-8 come with. What's the spare tire package.... ??

Thanks,

Andrew

This has already been discussed in this thread amongst others. The search function is there to help you find this sort of information.

Gee why didn't I think of that???? Maybe it's because at the time I posted it didn't seem to be functuning. I am in the middle east and don't really have the time to keep rechecking the se..arch engine... I am lucky I have internet access at all... I didn't mean to put you out but if it had been discussed you didn't have to read the message . I wish i had as much time as you to surf the net but I have to save some lives every now and again..

If you tried the search and failed, great, thanks for at least trying. We do get a whole lot of folks here who are too lazy to even try looking for answers before asking their question - glad you're not one of them.

BTW, if I had wanted to be an asshole, I wouldn't have included a link to the answer. :)

BTW2, if this is your first time on the forum, chances are good that the slowness you're seeing is not because of your internet connection - the forum itself appears to be having some performance issues at the moment. Welcome aboard!

spare tire available in some markets?

My assumption (probably most) is that your question pertains to the US market. I know it's optional here ($395, I believe) - but I think it's standard in some markets but I gave up trying to keep up with the differences a long time ago. Hope you so save some lives - I think it's close to time to bring our troops back home. At least I hope it is! oh, thanks, too (for saving lives over there!)

Thats what I was afraid of... When I am in the states I am 45 miles from the nearest town so a full sized spare is a deffinate need.... thanks for the info....

There is NO option for a full size spare. It's a $400 donut. A number of sports(y) cars today come with runflats or kits. I took the donut out of my Miata and use a kit...if necessary. Risky, but that's what life is all about! IMHO

Oh, and if you're going to opt for the spare, get it installed as a port option. The port-installed option is complete with mounting bracket, wheel and tire, while the accessory version you can buy through your local dealer doesn't come with a tire - just the bracket and wheel! (Nobody has yet come up with a good reason why Mazda does it this way.)

15 year-old thread, but since it's already been bumped...

Looks like that spare has a much smaller overall diameter than the stock tire. I'd expect the computer to freak out and at the very least disable DSC and ABS due to the persistent difference in wheel speeds.

Never in a million years would I run that wheel on the rear axle. The diff will be constantly transferring torque to the non-spare wheel, causing torque steer and a lot of excess wear on the diff.

I guess it might be okay for limping off the highway or something, but it doesn't seem like good advice to pass around without massive caveats.

Kind of clever how he hung the spare, but I just tossed mine in the trunk without any restraints and it stays put, why, I don't know. I don't remember what it's from, either a Subaru or Mitsu. Found it at a junk yard. All dimensions match the RX, except it won't fit the front without rubbing the caliper. I figure if I get a flat in front, I'll use the spare to replace a rear tire, then put the rear tire on the front. Extra work, but I'm using what I could find. I searched all over a large wrecking yard, and it was hard to find a spare with all the right dimensions, so I took the best available.

You don't want to use a donut spare on the rear axle because, as mentioned, the LSD will have to constantly work and you can end up damaging it.

The trunk is also already pathetically small, and a spare tire will eat away that space.

IMO it's just a lose-lose situation with this car. That's why I just kept the repair kit in the trunk and keep a tow company phone number handy.

i dont think the trunk is that small given the car itself. the opening sucks, that is tiny

New Yorker 12-05-2018 08:05 AM

I wouldn’t have the OEM spare if my 8 hadn’t come with one; it does take up a lot of useful space hanging in the trunk like that, plus it blocks the trunk light from effectively lighting the trunk interior.

I haven’t sold it because I don’t use the trunk much in the first place. Plus I’m lazy.

The wheel is a 17x4T alloy and the tire (as fitted when the spare is ordered as a port-installed option) is a Bridgestone Tracompa-2 T125/70-D17 temporary donut - max inflation 60psi, max speed 50mph.
