Source and best price on Rays Volks?

1 Attachment(s)
Anyone got a good source for Rays Volks? These are the same as the MS wheels (and like only 17.6 Lbs!) but are apt to be cheaper... but I can't find a vendor. Can anyone help?

Great, that helps folks. But....

I thought "Rays Volks" are different from VOLKS wheels... Volks I can find, just not the Rays version. Looking at all the Volks, the Mazdaspeed wheel looks different... not exactly like any of the Volks.

So, any suggestions?

Relentless 01-14-2005 04:34 PM

Rays Engineering makes the Volk Racing branded wheels. I think the MS wheel must be MS-only, but made by Rays. Rays also makes the wheel for the Track-model 350Z, and I think the wheel is available only for the Z. So the only way to get that particular wheel model would be to get the Mazdaspeed version.

Nope, I want the non-Masdaspeed-branded versions of these wheels. But thanks. :)

Anyone?

Relentless 01-16-2005 12:01 PM

I don't think they exist.

4 main measurements to make it fit:
  • Bolt pattern and size: In the case of the RX-8, it's 5 x 114.3
  • Offset: In the case of the RX-8, it's 50mm. Other offsets will fit up to about 40mm without major problems.
  • Wheel diameter: 18 inches is standard on the sport model and up
  • Wheel width: 8 inches on the 18 inch wheels
So the factory rim is 5x114.3, 50mm, 18x8. Some people have put larger sizes on, eg, 19 and 20 inch wheels, but this is pretty much just for show. If you want performance, smaller diameter 17" wheels will actually help acceleration a little bit.

One other thing to consider: Wheel weight. The factory 18" wheels weigh about 23 Lbs each. Larger wheels usually weigh more. If you're after performance you definitely don't want heavier wheels as they add "unsprung weight" which is the worst kind.

What I'm trying to do is stay with 18" wheels and find something that both looks good and weighs less.

Hope this helps.

blksf8 01-16-2005 01:08 PM

do you really need to get Rays or Volks? SSR has a few different types of wheels (the most known one is the competitions) where weight for 18x8 or 18x8.5 is 16.9lbs or 18 or so lbs max. They are good wheels, but they'll run you about $450-$500 a piece.

Relentless 01-16-2005 01:49 PM

You might also consider the Volk TE37 and CE28. Both are about 16-17lbs depending on wheel width.

My goal is some weight savings without spending $2000 for a set of wheels, but I appreciate the suggestion. The first ones I considered was the SSR Comps that Tirerack sells, but don't really want to spend that much. Thanks for the input though!

Believe me, I've noticed them too. :D

blksf8 01-16-2005 07:40 PM

Volks are expensive though. You'll be paying at least $1600-1700 for a set of 18s.

We are on the same path here Omi.
My thoughts: I'm between the ce28 and the GT-N. monoblock vs 2piece, lighter vs better looking... I'm also staying with 18 (18x8fr,18x9rr) since 19 are too expensive & heavy.

I'd buy the ce28 straight away (its only 16-17lbs!) if the gt-n is much heavier, but I can't find the weight for this one:( In mine opinion, the ce28 looks better than the te37. However, the gunmetal gt-n will be just great on my black 8. You see, I simply can't decide:o

What I don't know yet, is the offset (not sure what values are good to have) and what tire dimensions to put on...

Help anyone?

blksf8 01-16-2005 08:24 PM

I like the CE28s as well in titanium silver. Anyone have these on their 8 yet?

Relentless 01-16-2005 08:45 PM

If you're looking at 18s, I would get the CE28s either in 18x8.5 or 18x9, both come in +40 offset. You can fit 245/40 tires on either wheel. But if you go with 18x9s, you can always get wider tires.

Relentless 01-16-2005 08:48 PM

If you're looking to not spend $2k, I think Volks are out of the picture. You might look at Enkei wheels, most of which will run about 19-20 lbs each in 18x8.5 or 18x9, but will be much much cheaper. But I think they look cheap too.

joyridevr6 01-16-2005 10:14 PM

I bought my volks from Rishie at autornd he has a spot in the vendor section of this site. I could find no better price than what he offered.

LOL, oops. Forgot you were in Greece. :D

Maybe you could find someone in SoCal to buy 'em for you and ship them to you?

brillo 01-18-2005 10:04 PM

Omi,

I've done alot of research, and unfortuantely, to get any truly light weight wheels, you looking at spending at $2K for the wheels. You could save some money on the lighter weight enekei types, but I hear they are alot more fragile. the closest wheel to the MS one is the SSR GT2, and they are about $450 a wheel? and really light. Match them with a good set of Toyo's and your talking about a 8lb saving per wheel. I think to really feel the difference, you'd have to go that light....so all in your talking 3K with tires, which as someone will surely point out, is as much as a turbo kit.

I'm going to start buy getting lighter weight tires when mine burn out, see how that feels, and then decide. I may decide still to go the light weight 8 option, and rather than turbo the car, just strip as much weight off as I can to get the car down to the 2600lb range.

Good wheels also have a good resale value on Ebay for what I can tell, if you decide to get rid of them in the future. If I could only find 10K on the street, these decisions would be so much easier......

heh, nice... anyway a friend of mine in Cyprus can get them from japan and send them to me for 2700euros, shippment included. DO you think that's a good price for brand new CE28s??

Well, while I want to save weight here, it's not SO important to me that I'm willing to spend a ton of money. I was hoping since I can get the MS wheels for around $500 each that maybe the "generic" non-MS brand could be had for maybe $100 less per wheel, which might be worth it. But I still chafe at paying even that much considering I'm not unhappy with the factory wheels.

I'm thinking more and more that the Axis Hiros at 19.6 Lbs each are looking better and better, and they'll only run around $250 each. Anyway thanks for the input. :)

And, 2600 Lbs? That's an awful lot of weight to shave! Where are you thinking you're going to be saving that much?

Hmmm... 2700 EUR =
$3,517.35 USD.   !! Strikes me as kinda expensive... but maybe not in your country. What do YOU think? :(

I think that's expensive in any country.

Not all 19s are heavy. The Enkei RP03 is a one-piece wheel, and it weighs 20.5 lbs in 19x8.5 and 21.6 lbs in 19x9.5.

The Enkei RC5 is a close match the MS wheel, and it comes in 18x9. However, they are two-piece, weigh about 19.5 lbs per wheel. Plus they cost about $450-$550 per wheel, so you might as well get the Volks at that price.

I ordered a set of 5Zigen FN01R-C in 18x8.5, I couldn't find a consistent weight but everything I saw said they were <20 lbs, and many sites said 17 or 18 lbs. They ran about 275 each.

2600 lbs is going to be pushing it I know, I'm also talking down the road where this won't be my primary daily driver.

for starters
- Lighter Battery - 20lb
- Wheels and tires- 32lbs
- Racing Seats - 50lbs
- Light weight exhaust - 30lb
- Remove most airbags - 20lbs
- No Cat - 15lb
- Total 167lb

Fully fueled, that gets me down to 2,793, I'm going to see how much more I can go without stripping out the interior/ac/radio stuff as I would still want to be able to live with the car.

First of all it includes shipping to my door, so product itself is a little less. Also currencies are a bit tricky now...
But, hmmm, let me enlighten you Paul. A local dealer here told me 4000euros for the same rims, how's that? :o
Even Mazda here has unbelievable prices: make a wild guess for... fender strakes, lets say.
.
.
.
450euros, please don't faint...:D that's why I bought them from rosthental
I don't know why the prices are so high, maybe some people want to take advantage of the rest, just because they love their cars... but in the end what can you do? How much do these rims cost in th US anyway?

And thanks for sharing your opinion:)

Relentless 01-19-2005 02:38 PM

The CE28 would be about $2100 plus tires, which would include free mounting, balancing, and shipping.

Outlaws eXtreme 01-19-2005 03:02 PM

how about the SF Challenges 19" with SO3s or Toyos... Best I got is still $3250 with mounting, balancing, and tax included. :P Anyone can do better?

Gambitx 01-19-2005 03:05 PM

I got 3060 shipped with Nitto tires from Revhighonline.com

Outlaws eXtreme 01-19-2005 03:21 PM

:P I can get Nitto 19" tires for about 175 each... they are kinda uhmm not the exact best tires to get. I was happy with them before when I had some ghetto rims on my Civic. But to put Nittos on a Volk... ack.. I just can't do it.

Rims alone for Volk was about 2250-2350 range. So I was at least looking around 250 per tire.

Relentless 01-19-2005 03:50 PM

The Toyos would probably be cheaper than the S03s. You're looking at Wheel Options right (Discount Tire)? Vick at Wheel Options said not to trust revhighonline's quotes, I forget what the reason was exactly. I think it had something to do with Mackin (the sole Volk distributor in the U.S.).

What color SF-Challenges were you looking at?

brillo 01-23-2005 10:38 PM

Omi,

the OZ's superleggera's are nice looking/light weight and not to expensive for 18's at about $350 a piece. You can prolly get those and some decent rubber like Toyo or Perelli for about $2100 all in, and lose about 7lb per wheel. I forgot about these wheels and ran across them on the tire rack.

If money was no object, personally I think the SSR GT2's look nice as they are very close to stock and extremely light weight, but cost about $450 a wheel.

Endless Rotaries 01-24-2005 02:23 AM

Guys, thought I would chime in. If there are a couple of you guys interested in any GT series or SF series wheels, specifically three guys at a time, I can do those SF Challenges in any of the standard colors, 19x8.5 and 9.5, with Toyo T1S, 245/35 and 275/30/19, for about $3100.00 shipped. If you guys would like Black Tuner McGard Wheel locks and Muteki Black Lugnuts, I can toss those in for another $50.00.

Total: $3150.00 shipped with T1S, 19" SF Challenge standard color, Muteki Black Hardware and Matching McGard Black Tuner Wheel Locks.

It's hard for me to get on the boards during the day. I'm limited to retail sales at night. This would be something that I can't do all the time. I'm basically tossing you guys tires for "free". Shipping is a good $150.00 with tires mounted on 19's.

Please email me if you're interested in GT series or SF series wheels. They run the same discount structure. Not sure how many of the 8's know me, but my references do extend for quite some years into the rotary community. I myself am an FC owner but primarily do footwork tuning on FD's and SE's.

Any of our wheel clients are entitled to further discounts on other footwork items we distribute like, Endless/Zeal, RSR, Espelir, Silkroad, etc....

Thanks, Rishie
