Shorter coilover springs
 

Okay guys so I just got new wheels and tires and im afraid that once I get them on I wont be able to go as low as I want to in the rear. Right now im about 1/8 inch from the lowest point and I want to be able to go about 1/4 to 1/2 inch lower.

Is there any ways other than getting shorter springs to be able to do this? I know its not advised to tighten the top two lock nuts more compressing the spring but would it hurt anything to just turn those up about a 1/8 inch so I could lower it more or would this not really help?

I heard that a company named spring makes shorter springs but I cant find their site or anything.

I have megan coilovers and, I talked to them and they said they have 150mm springs and also 120s currently im at 160mm, would it hurt to just swap in the 150mm to get a little lower?

Shorter springs may be a problem because the sleeves may not compress them enough to keep them from moving so it depends on the coilover. I recently resolved an on going issue with Stance coilovers on Hoss-05's car. They shipped the coilovers with springs that we too short (twice) and the rates were all off. The correct springs needed to be 200MM.

It looks to me like if the spring was just shorter that I coul d move the top two lock nuts up to still hold the spring in place and then that would allow me to move the entire shaft down further into the mounting point. The entire area where the locknuts are is threaded so I would imagine I could put a very short spring on there, I would just lose ssome travel back there. Currently it is a 6k 160mm spring I would think that a 7k 140mm would be perfect.

But im not sure if I would mess up the shock much by switching this new spring in.

At the moment pretty much all three locknuts are touching eachother so im stuck unless either I get shorter spring or possibly adjust the top two lock nuts to compress the spring which ive heard is not advisable.

I would PM tilt and ask him about it, I know that people swap collars, springs, etc. but I don't know what springs work with which collars, etc.

i wouldnt do it, your shock will still travel the same length which means at full droop the springs could unseat, i guess if you really want to you can get a set of tender springs to hold it in place,

Yeah I remember tbk wanted to do something like this with his Tanabe coilovers to go really, really low. And IIRC, it involved installing helper springs an different collars. But he doesn't have hi 8 anymore so he doesn't log on much.

Thanks for some more information guys, ill wait to get my wheels on before i go ahead anymore. And if I need to go lower ill search for some options probably wil get the 10mm shorter springs in the end though.
