Shock question

I recently changed to Eibach Pro springs. Love the look and the handling. However, as I previously posted in another thread a couple weeks back, I now have a 'problem' with what I think is under dampening of the rear. Going over 'bumps' at speeds of 10-35mph produce a loud jarring bang type of noise from the rear (and I've check everything out and see no problems - also, the bump stops were all trimmed 1 inch with the spring change). After researching and reading other posts (and magazines, etc.) I think the problem may be that the rear shocks are not beefy enough to handle the increased spring rate of the Eibachs (although based on a couple responses from others on this forum, I may be one of the only ones (with Eibachs) experiencing this?! Hmmmm.....

Anyway, I'm thinking about replacing the rear shocks and have found that there are really only a couple of alternatives (Koni sports or Tokico). I've pretty much decided on the Koni's......but......will I be doing any harm by only replacing the rear? I really don't have the $$$ to spend on all 4 right now and want to try and resolve the problem in the rear with the thought of replacing the front probably next spring.
Your feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

I know it's been almost 8 years on this thread, but I just got a used 2004 RX-8 MT with almost 80k miles and mine does that too. But the thing is, I have stock suspension and it only does it if I have any extra weight or someone else riding with me. If anyone else has figured out why it sounds like a bang or the rear bottoming out, please let me know. Thanks.

I think you should replace your shocks. Mine are completely gone in the rear. 178,000 miles on 2004. 1.3LOF replaced his about a year ago or so and he only had 100,000 miles and three of his four were gone.

The stock shocks last a good while being a gas oil design. But its possible that yours has finally seen their day. I would go ahead and replace them. There isn't much else that would cause that jarring but a bad shock.
