Powertrix Coilovers - Springs rubbing on Shock Body
 

I posted this in the dumb question thread, but maybe it isn't a dumb question since I did not get a response :dunno:

I just replaced the lower mounts on my Powertrix coilovers because the bushings were failing. While doing so I saw damage to the passenger rear coilover. The springs on the rear passenger side are rubbing against the shock body (the rear driver side does not show any signs of this happening.) There are also marks on the outside of the spring. It seems as though the springs are buckling and being kicked towards the front end of the car as they compress. The marks are on the strut tower and spring on the side facing the rear end while only the springs show marks on the side facing the front of the car.

I installed the coilovers myself about a year ago. The locking nuts were set so that the spring was barely able to spin. I was lowered to about 1.5"-2.0" below stock height. I had the alignment done at a shop about a week after installation.

Would any one be able to give me insight on what could be causing this?

Hmm haven't seen this before. All I can think it the top mount is allowing too much movement, moving the spring out of angle against the shock body. I could be completely off though, first time I'm seeing this.

Thanks for the reply GK. I tore them apart while putting the new lower mounts on and reassembled them. I also changed my damper from 6 over soft to 6 below full stiff so hopefully that helps. I reinstalled everything along with RB sway bars and end links. I guess I'll find out if it is fixed on my test drive tomorrow.

I just got back from my test drive and everything is fixed! No more noises! I even went and found some speed bumps to slowly go over to test everything. The ride is even smoother than it was before! Looks like the failed bushings were the cause to all my problems.
