Installed my powder coated wheels
2 Attachment(s)
I just got my wheels fresh from the powder coater. I think they look great, but I'll have to wait a few weeks to see what they look like mounted. Its still too cold for my summer tires. I know many others have done this, but I'm stoked so I felt like starting a thread. Cost was $350 and they are coated a wet black that was custom made for Orange County Choppers (I live just South of OCC).

looks really good man.. if i could take my car out of commision for long enough to do it, and knew someone here who could/would for that kind of money.. i'd do it in a heart beat. i think i would rather have a less shiny more flat black for my galaxy ghey though. Looks great!!
looks great! can't wait to see them on the car!
high five powdercoating buddy. there seem to be more and more people doing this now. when i did mine all i found was a few odd threads. now i think my pics have help to spread this
what company did you have do them?
Thank you for all the positive comments so far. I guess I should mention I have a black beauty 8. So far I blacked out the wheels, the badges, and the smoke out tail light kit is in the mail.

those wheels look real nice.

Looks like you got an excellent deal. Good job!
Massive tease. What, we have to imagine them on the 8 now??!!!
They look pretty sweet on your floor, tho. :lol2: |
hey btw did you ship it to them or drop it off?
Yeah, sorry it is a bit of a tease, but trust me the rims are tormenting me also. Everytime I walk by them I think, "damn I cant wait to see how they look on".

Ugh - I want this done but cant find anyone local to do it for a reasonable price.
Did they strip them down for you too? The cheapest I found so far is 80 a wheel, if I bring it stripped. |
Yeah they sand blasted them for me and took off the tire and TPMS all included in the $350 price.

wow they dont look like stock rims anymore!!
I'd like to see a black 8 with either bronze or gold powdercoat. Couple guys on the evo forums painted their stock's bronze and it looks great on a black evo.
bronze even looks sweeter with black cherry :D:
Yeah I thought real hard about getting a nice bronze, but overall I felt like with all the other blackout mods im doing that the wet black would look terriffic once all is said and done. Somebody on this forum has a black eight with bronze painted rims and it does look nice. To each his own.
I am still waiting to find a black on black. or more pics with black cars at least.
black car and bronze rims wonder what that looks like. |

sweet. I'm thinking of powdercoating my aftermarket 18" 5Zigen Super6's either black or bronze as an alternative to getting new rims.....still haven't decided, but if I can get all 4 done for $300ish, I'll do it.

Updated pic on my rims. The red outline has always been my plan, and today I finally got a chance to see what it looks like. I just did it fast and I will have to re-apply carefully once my tires are installed, but I think it will look great. They only thing I might do is buy the expensive black centercaps. I know their dusty and have fingerprints all over them. I forgot to wipe them off before the pics.
pretty! :icon_tup: IMO,it'll be nice if those flying M logo in black :)
I agree it would look nice with the M black. I already tried taping it off and spraying it black (that didnt work out so well), and I dont want brush marks. So im kinda at a lost. Any ideas? Thats why im really thinking about dropping $130 for those black center caps.
The black center caps would look sweet.
if i didnt have an NG i woulda done this mod instead of buying a new set. good job.

Ok so I got my tires mounted and balanced on the powder coated wheels. I have to say what I experianced and was told today im not feeling as good about the wheels, but I still think they look excellent and I just hope they hold up well. I called 5 local tire places.
I like to go with the privately owned tire shops because I feel like they have more pride in their work, but all 4 "local" places said they would not due to powder coated rims being susceptible to being damaged. I ended up taking them to Mavis Tire, definately not my first choice (actually my only choice). Sure enough they did get a little damaged, not bad, I already touched them up and they look perfect. Also I got the bad news that one of my rims is bent, not horribly, but nonetheless it is bent. Here are the pics. I know the car is really dirty, I was running out of light and just wanted to snap some quick pics. I dont think the pics due the rims justice. I love the look I just hope they hold up well.. |

one last pic.

looks pretty good.
looks good, i just dont liike the centercaps =/
Honestly the center caps look good in person, im most likely going to change them to the black ones. But that is due to the fact that most likely the paint is not going to hold up well. They look almost orange in the pic and slightly off from the red outline, but in person they are a nice deep red just like the outline. They match perfect and that is the only reason i left it. The red was originally supposed to be the bottom layer of paint, then I was going to tape off the mazda symbol (so it would have been gloss black with a red flying M). I tired this on one center cap and it came out terrible. So I was either going to paint them black or red, and I think the red looks better, then the black.

My Powdercoated wheels, fresh on today, with KDW's
Wanted a lighter grey, but this one still looks good, its hard to tell from tiny swatches! |
^ Niceee. I love white 8's. Just so clean. If I could do it all over again I would have gotten a white one.
Looks good, are you gonna leave the center caps like that or replace them with the black rotor ones?
