Red Devil 11-04-2004 10:59 AM

Do you have the Dunlops or Bridgestones?

DreRX8 11-04-2004 11:19 AM

LOL--1st off this thread will probably be moved to Tires section.
2nd: Yes, the Bridgestones don't last at all--they are an excellent tire for grip and track use but their treadwear is like 180 and they are easily $240 a pop after tax and mounting/balancing. I just replaced all four of mine with Nitto 555s with a tread wear rating of 300, Z rated whereas the Bridgestones are W rated I believe. The Nittos are also $154 mounted/balanced; and the ride is actual a little smoother. I did a search on here before choosin the Nitto's and there are just as many pro-Nitto comments as anti-Nitto comments; non of it had substantive cons--so I decided to try them out.

Twinturbo2800 11-04-2004 11:24 AM

i have the stock bridgestone potenzas

but damn, $600+ every 6 months :'(

davesaunders300 11-04-2004 11:31 AM

I've got the Bridgestone Potenzas too and I'm at 19,000 plus in about 14 months. From the way they look now, I expect them to go close to 40,000 before they will need to be replaced. I check the air pressure about once a week and have to add a little air to one or two of them each week. Have you been careful about maintaining proper air pressure?

yamajj 11-04-2004 11:43 AM

just to put your comments in perspective, i also have two motorcycles.(both r1's) i got 2300 miles out of the stock tires on the '01 and i got a little over 4000 out of the stock tires out of the '02. my '01 has finished off tire set number 3 at just over 12,000 miles. my '02 is working on it's 2nd set and it has just over 8,000 miles.

traction is very important to me on my bikes just as much as it is on my rx-8. i'd like more mileage, but i prefer traction first.

just have fun with your car and remember my favorite saying, "come on, it's only money."

I have the Dunlops, so I'll be interested to see how long they last. I only put about 500 miles on the car a month, so I hope it takes a while.

TownDrunk 11-04-2004 12:13 PM

I've got over 13000 miles (and closing on 17 months) on my Potenzas and they still look new. I have a manual, I don't drive too crazy, I drive spirited in corners, but don't light the tires up (on purpose). Sounds a little premature to me, but I wouldn't expect more than 20000 out of them.

zoom44 11-04-2004 12:15 PM

ive got 15k miles on my bridgestones. lots of tread life left but ive got a little feathering which i hope will be corrected when i get an allingment soon. i expect these to last me until at least next summer. so about a full year not your 6months.

azharo 11-04-2004 12:40 PM

When was the last time you rotated?

Twinturbo2800 11-04-2004 01:09 PM

not rotated yet, fronts have a good 60-70% left

NomisR 11-04-2004 01:12 PM

My fronts and backs still have good 60-70% at 8000 miles and I drive them hard (for street driving anyways)

czr 11-04-2004 01:58 PM

Hopefully, the initial set will be the only ones lasting 20k miles! Even $650 every year and a half hurts. That's over 7 months of car insurance.

Parmer8 11-04-2004 02:16 PM

I've got 22K+ miles on the original Potenzas. Grip is decent. I can slide around during hard cornering easier now. Thank goodness for DSC. They have about 2/32" or so left. They will probably last till 24K miles until they really need replacing. I rotate the tires every 5k miles.

Twinturbo2800 11-04-2004 03:22 PM

i think they may be BS'n me..... cuase about 4 weeks ago i went to an rx-8 meet at flemington mazda and they gave out free car inspections. everything came back fine and it said tire tred% was fine, so somthings messed up, lol

pret 11-04-2004 05:38 PM

treadwear

i had 5/32 @ 15K, 0/32 @19K. Replaced with Michilin Pilot Sports. Excellent Tire!

Mikelikes2drive 11-04-2004 06:16 PM

i have 7.5 k miles on my tires and theyre still in the green according to the dealership but i rotated my tires at uhmm around 6500. sounds like u didnt rotate ur tires

6speed8 11-04-2004 07:05 PM

18,000 + miles - Still in the green per dealer, I rotate them every 7k miles and keep 32 psi.

huh???

They're tires. They're on the outside of the car. Inspect them yourself!

Tread depth gauges cost $5. While you're at the auto parts store pick up a GOOD QUALITY pressure gauge $10+.

Low profile tires don't hold very much air so very small over or under inflation changes the contact patch drastically. Too much pressure wears the center of the tread. Too little inflation wears the edges. Under inflation is the norm. Most people drive around with under inflated tires.

If that's not the problem get the alignment checked by a high performance shop.

By the Book...

you should have rotated your tires @ 5K & 10K miles. I have 10K on the Dunlops and still got plenty o' tread left. 6MT with DSC & TC off most of the time. Not afraid to light em up or chirp em if I get the urge  Also make sure they are balanced and properly inflated.

pret 11-15-2004 04:08 PM

rotation

i rotated mine 6, 12, and 18K
