Odd collection of warning lights.

Started off on some quick errands today, all was fine at start up. Due to a talkative neighbor the 8 was plenty warm by the time I pulled out.

Our streets are current a mess of slippery, slushy snow that wants to freeze, sitting on top of a layer of ice.

I made about 3 or 4 turns and a couple of stops with occassional visits from the TCS light. This is sort of normal for our roads.

Then, I made a turn onto a major street that is banked away from the direction of the turn. TSC and DSC both liked to be involved on this particular turn and they were on this occaision.

Then, the TSC light, the ABS light and the Brake light all came on and stayed on. It took me a few minutes to get off the highway (with a very low speed exit and brake test along the way) and over the side of the road.

I shut the car down, restarted, no lights and things were fine for the rest of the trip.

Three questions:

First, is this something I should be concerned about and have investigated? (08 40th Anniversary edition with about 4000k on it)

Second, the TSC and DSC systems are in some senses emergency or occasional use systems unlike say the braking or steering systems. With our current road conditions the TSC and DSC are seeing frequent, but light (low speeds and minor applications) use. Is this harmful to these systems or are they built to withstand frequent deployment?

Third, this is my first ABS equipped automobile. The sound of the braking under ABS or the braking component of DSC can best be described as a grinding or shuddering sound rather than a pulsing sound. Does this sound normal?

Cheers,
t

this has been seen before, but it was an issue on the 04 to 06 where the electric steering connector would get moisture in it..

it could be a problem in the 08, but i thought that they updated the connector..

i would recommend taking it to the dealer for documentation, and see if there is a pending code..

please post back on what you find..

this just happened to me about a half hour ago. just after making a left turn and mildy stopping for the volvo in front of me that understeered a little. snowy weather, roads are mushy and its 28 degrees F.

didn't want to risk the car acting funny if i shut it down so i drove about 3 more miles to the house. en route, i broke hard to test the abs and goosed the gas to test the tcs. car acted normal. shut it down in the driveway and started it back up again, no lights.

getting a new shift boot put in soon and i'll try to get some answers then.

I have had this happen to me on track. I took a turn a little too wide and hit the rumbles on exit. Car stability was fine, but all the indicators mentioned lit up. I did not push the car that session to test if ABS/DSC/TSC were still functional, but next session everything was ok.

That was the only time its happened. And I am still a noob, so I track with DSC etc on.
