New Suspension parts Noise Hunt (pictures inside)

2 Attachment(s)
hey guys, a few weeks ago me and some of the socal guys installed some new suspension parts on my car.

WHAT I INSTALLED.

Progress tech front and rear sways
AP end links
Koni Yellow on Tein s techs.

THE SETTINGS NOW.

the sways are set to soft on the back and in the center hole in the front.
the koni front set up is set to stiffest

PROBLEM.
During un even surfaces like going up and down i would hear a KNOCKING sound coming from the front of the car.

ive been doing a little research and all threads lead to the endlinks we did PRELOAD them during the install which was a mistake

WHAT I DID
i undid all the bolts on the end links and with all four tires on the ground re tightened them.

Also we didnt have any lube/grease on the bushings so i put some on it with the car on the ground which was more or less inadequate as it was hard to really get in there.

after doing all this there is still this knocking noise, so i decided to take some photos to see if they are installed right, as i couldnt find any threads with proper install photos i found 1 then i lost it.

ive been doing test drives and living under my car since the install

any help is appreciated .

Are the end links put on right?

Sorry i am at work and cant see the pics, but just a heads up, i nkow a lot of people had issues with sway bars rubbing against the shock assembly once the car was lowered and stress was put on the suspension. When you lift the car check to see if the inside of the shock assembly has some marks on it.

Is the knocking only on low speeds, or even at high speeds? Low speed could just be suspension knocking aka the noise resonating through the chassis that you normally wouldn't get from stock suspensions set ups that have dampners.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

ShinkaTeen 08-25-2010 12:16 PM

i really couldnt tell you, but i notice the sound the most during low speeds as thats when there is the less noise.

i dont think the sway bar is hitting the shock, if you see the photos (whenever u can) u can see th sway bar has enough room to move.

Gotcha, yea I wont get home for another hour or two, so sorry if i am throwing out ideas that dont make sense with the pics you posted.

Other things I can think of is to make sure that you torqued down the nuts on the endlinks to spec, if you left a little give on them the threads could be clicking against the sway bar or control arm. If you have already, how much torque did you put on them, just to compare with others?

Only other thing i can think of is that they front shocks are going (even though they are new, again, shot in the dark). Clicking from the front is often an indicator of lack of oil inside the shocks's internal valves.

If I think of anything else after looking at your pics I will let you know

ShinkaTeen 08-25-2010 01:21 PM

i thought about it being the shocks, but if it were the shocks it would do it during speed bumps and it isnt.

only on weird surfaces

i looked at 2 other threads and im 90% sure its the end links.

Endlinks and sway bar is more likely than the shocks/springs, is my feeling.
Endlinks should be torqued to spec, ~42 ft lbs if I remember. Sway bar brackets also should be tightened down, but not so much that you squish all the grease out of the brackets (you did grease the brackets, right?)

ShinkaTeen 08-25-2010 01:59 PM

yeah everything is torqued down tight, i DID grease the brackets BUT after the install NOT during it so i had to maneuver a q tip in the crack and pray to jesus it spreads around.

But after taling to the tech at agency power it has also come to my attention i put the top spacer on the wrong side.

im gonna address these 2 issues tomorrow.

fastlaneracing 08-25-2010 02:16 PM

If im not mistaken its seems like you have installed your endlinks wrong.

ShinkaTeen 08-25-2010 02:37 PM

my spacers are put in the wrong place! your right

but what else do u see thats wrong?

fastlaneracing 08-25-2010 02:54 PM

Spacers go between Uniball and swaybar/linkarm.

In the first picture you havent "locked" your adjustibility, the lower mutter.

dieselsdad 08-25-2010 05:39 PM

Did you tighten your upper control arm bolts AFTER the car was on the ground, under it's full weight and settled? If you tightened them while it was still in the air, the binding can cause the noise.

dieselsdad 08-25-2010 05:44 PM

Also, the preload on the front bar end links needs to be set so that they can be bolted or un-bolted without twisting the swaybar at all, that is the preload. Just making sure you understood correctly. Hope some of this might help.

ShinkaTeen 08-25-2010 06:12 PM

the upper control arm bolts were ttightened while up in the air. ill undo them and re tighten them

elysium19 08-25-2010 07:16 PM

yeah...and really a Qtip isn't going to cut it, you need to take off the sway brackets and lube the crap out of them.

I've seen poorly lubed sway bar brackets cause a sound that sounded like loose end links, and it confused the crap outta me. So cover all your bases.
