Missing Lug Nut Key
So, as some of you probably know, I just got my first 8. When checking out my rims today, I noticed something...these cars have locking lug nuts. :banghead:
I only use that smilie because I didn't get a key from the dealership. (In fact, I didn't get my spare key or my valet key, either, because the last guy kept them. wtf?) So, my question is...can you buy these keys? From either ebay (preferably!) or an auto parts place? Maybe even Mazda if I HAVE to. :) |
When I lost my key, I bought a set of OEM locking lug nuts w/ a key for $11 on ebay.
Then took the car to the dealer and borrowed their key to remove the locking nuts. The dealer offered to sell me a key for, I believe it was, $15. |
Sweet. Thanks for the info.

No problem.
Don't quote me on the dealer price because I'm not sure if they were just willing to sell me their used key or if that is actually what they charge. Call your dealer's parts dept for an accurate price. |
Did you check where the OEM jack is stored in the trunk? That is where my lugnut key was inside a little envelope.
You could also use the universal lugnut key, a socket that is just slightly smaller than the lock and hammer it on there, then twist it off. |

I do know the previous owner kept a lot of things - spare key, valet, the cover for the engine, floor mats, ect. So it's definitely possible that they kept the lug key too. (Please excuse any misused terminology or stupid questions; I'm new to the 'working on cars' world and I'm a chick, so... lol any breaks would be appreciated. :fingersx: ) |
Locking lug nuts? I didn't know about this? Does mine have it, let me check it out...hmmmm....
|
take an impact socket thats barely smaller than the lug nut and then beat it on and impact it off..... thats what i had to do and it was free and now put a regular lug nut on or go by another set of locking ones from somewhere
|
Open the trunk and look at the end closest to you, there should be a long plastic piece there, it flips open.

Like others said, check your jack compartment. My RX8 came with two keys. I leave one stored in the compartment. |
I searched every inch of my RX8 to no avail. No key.
I bought a $30 lug remover off of Amazon and it worked..... 1 time.... So I took a 3/4 16pt 1/2" drive socket, hammered it on and it did the trick. I did not know there were Mazda factory locks, otherwise I wold have mentioned it when I was at the dealer this past week. |
$30 Lug removal tool = waste of money
Ace hardware 3/4" 16pt sockets were $5 each, I only needed 2 to finish the job, but, if I needed 4 it would be $20. Took them right off and have new ones on. What a PITA, too bad I did not know about them being dealer installed. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...3/376ca85f.jpg |
every dealership has a master set of wheel lock keys, so usually the easy way is to have them pop off the old ones and just buy a set of new ones for the $25 or whatever they are (or the techs probably have a drawer full of the take off lugs, and ditch the stupid locks altogether)
the part number for the lock set is something like 0000-88-120C in theory the key is available separate, but you have to find out which key it is, and then order it from the manufacturer, so its cheaper but its complex and takes forever |
