Lowering with stock rims

Well guys I thought I was going to get rims but it's pointless I guess if I am not lowered.
So, suspension first. The rx8 already has a pretty sick suspension so
My question is how much should I spend and what is better to do: shocks and springs or coilovers.
My limit on suspension would be about 450 bucks.
Anyone want to throw out some good brands for that price? And maybe post pics of your rides lowered with stock rims?

thanks for bringing this topic to our attention ... it has actually never been discussed here.

s13-to-rx8 04-12-2012 07:03 PM

I know the difference between coilovers and springs but what works better for an rx8?
I just do daily driving do I'm going more for looks.

RIWWP 04-12-2012 07:13 PM

"Better" is entirely subjective to what you do, what roads you have, what clearance you need, what you intend to do, what you want to improve, what you want to change.

For $450 you can pretty much just do springs, and low-ish quality ones at that. Coilovers or a good shock/spring combo will run you $1,100 to $1,900, and even then plenty of people here will consider those "cheap". You have to get up to ~$2,500 - $3,000 for the setup before you won't find many people to bash your selection (though some now bash your willingness to spend that much). Mods ARE NOT cheap on this car. Period.

But, considering the impression you gave in the midpipe question thread, I'm less than confident of this thread to.

I'm feeling nice. Even if you are solely going for looks, get decent coilovers. Shocks and springs will always leave you desiring more in the looks department. Crappy coilovers (<$1000) will leave you desiring more in the ride quality/awesomeness department.

I say go with a good set of coilovers, Springs/Strut combos are to limited as far as adjustments go, such as camber, toe, caster go.

Low grade coilovers: Not necessarily quality, but priced @ $1200, and under. depending on model.

I agree!

You have been part of the forum almost a year, and you have not found any information on what is better springs or coil overs?
There are pages of information out there just for you to read!

Now the next person that decides he wants to research lowering his 8 will have to see your thread of worthless questions, before they get to a real piece of knowledge.

For $450, buy some springs, or sell your 8 and buy a Nissan! :D:

s13-to-rx8 04-13-2012 08:41 AM

I read other reads as well but I like to directly ask my own questions too. Sometimes I don't find my exact questions in the threads. Thanks for all that input though guys!
And that blue rx8 looks really nice on that drop man.
I'm very new to the rx8 scene and just started getting on the forum again recently since I got my exhaust.
I'm very indecisive a lot about buying mods and very picky (even on little stuff)
But I promise I'll try to search more before posting! But there will always be that one guy to bash.
Help a noobie out ;)

Man you guys can be mean sometimes! I'm an Oklahoma college student who deals with some crappy roads, and I don't necessarily want coils for auto crossing or anything. Just daily street driving. I plan on getting some white Varrstoen's eventually, but want a drop first

Just get the best, forget the rest...that's all you need to know.

Site:rx8club.com Coilovers or springs

A plethora of information man, I know you want your own input but the answers that were given have been given at least ten times prior to this thread. :/

elysium19 04-22-2012 08:43 PM

honestly i do NOT understand why people recommend coilovers for someone like this.

"that way you can adjust x,y,x,a,b,c....." he doesnt need that at all!
Unless you're spending a ton of time at the track, the basic suspension adjustments plus a decent set of simple springs/shocks is plenty adjustable, fantastic to drive, and way cheaper unless you're gonna buy the shittiest of coilovers....

shakeyourbrakes 04-22-2012 08:52 PM

If you just want looks and a decent drop, i would go with Tokico Blue struts (400) and a set of Tein springs (150). If you have the funds for not a ton more you can get coilovers
