Ideas for shocks?

I just foud our my front right strut is busted. So need to get a new assembly. but i dont wanna pay out my ass for coilovers. ANyone have any ideas where i can get performance shocks? or something of this nature? so i can get some perfomance out my car?

I'll be nice today.

There are always low mileage stock shocks for sale so you can check there but honestly the subject of shocks has been delt with a million times so I suggest you use the search function. Shocks vary from everything from OEM replacement Monroe senstracs to $5,000.00 + coilovers.

first off i been searching i know how to use the search feature. Plus i think since this car was made in 04 i am pretty sure any topic is common. So I posted to see what kinda shock is considerably the best considering that i dont want coilovers plus i cant dish out that much

KYB replacements for stock shock is what you want.

koni?

D-Spec, Adjustable without taking them off the freaking car. Comfy cruse on "7", Track on "2" or "3". Need the cable extenders for the rears. BHR has all the pieces.

If you have them off, springs too. I did H-Tech, love them, cleaned up the front wheel gap, progressive, actually softer ride, much better on track as well.

Search the shocks and springs threads, I posted before and after pictures on an 04.

I like my Bilstein HD's with Progress Tech springs. Good combo. Also not a bank robber.

I am installing a set of new Tein S techs and a new set of KYB shocks this Saturday temporarily until I get my coil overs so i will let you know how they compare. I did do a bit of research on the KYB's and they are a decent Japanese made shock from what I can see. They are well made mono-tube shock that for example, uses piston wipers instead of o-rings like cheaper shocks.

I did contact KYB about the use of these shocks with lowering springs and this was the response.

The Gas-a-Just for the RX-8 are OE replacements and will generally work with less than 1” drop. I think the combination of the Tein springs and how much they lower the car will prematurely wear the units.

I'll have a nice set of Koni's available by the end of the week; on the car for a year. Perhaps as early as Nov 6th if your interested...

KYB makes Quality shock. in fact its one of the biggest shock maker for OEMs.

most people don't need coilovers. So don't waste your money on it.

alnielsen 11-01-2010 10:39 AM

Last I checked, KYB didn't make a perfomance shock for this car.
I had KYB's on a previous car. They were high pressure gas shocks that actually raised the height of the car.

I checked into the KYB Gas -A-Just as much as I could, they are a mono-tube shock with valving that is supposedly supposed to match OEM specs for the RX-8 with Sport suspension. Through an email the tech support guy did tell me that they do not have a direct comparison to the factory Tociko's and that these are not listed for the Shinka or 4th AE RX-8's (because they come with Bilstein HD's I presume) but that they do use piston wipers instead of O-rings internally. Piston wipers are typically used in higher quality shocks and o-rings are used in cheap, non performance oriented shocks.

I wanted something to hold me over and I got these at cost so we will see how they hold up :) Who knows I may love them, if not, I'm only out dinner at Ruth Chris :)

Sorry for bumping an old thread. But the shocks in the pics are front shocks, right?

9krpmrx8 02-24-2016 10:57 PM

Yes.

These are the rears.

9krpmrx8,

Hey, I just got Midland Mazda to put on my Bilstein B12 kit. Just as I imagined, it raised it from 13.5 rear to 14.5 all around; just right.

The stock shocks seem to be okay, but I'm sure are weak.

Anyone need them for replace of coilover when trading?

They are still very stiff, but don't push back out much.
