how much should i brake job cost?

Hey guys, i sent my car in today to mazda to see how bad the brakes were because i was getting really bad shaking while braking. I got a call that it needs new pads and rotors which i expected, what i didn't expect was how much they said it was going to cost. I was expecting about 800-1000 but was told it's going to cost 1600.
Does anybody know if this is normal or if i should be going somewhere else to get this done. They haven't ordered the parts yet because i told them i'd give them a call in the morning to see if i'm going to have them do it or not.

thanks
chris

Dude, this is so easy to do yourself for about $200 (just a guess) Maybe less.

You could do this with one jack on gravel.

RxMadness 03-24-2009 01:16 AM

That sounds extremely high, even for dealership service. pads for the RX are about $200 all around rotors cant be that much more,.. they're quoting you well over 1k in labor.

G3tR3DDY2GR3DDY 03-24-2009 01:48 AM

you can buy a big brake kit with 6piston calipers for that much...

well not quite but very close. please dont do this ...

AJ's Shinka 03-24-2009 01:56 AM

I just did mine for less than $200.00 with parts. Have any RX8 friends? I am soo happy I have this club sometimes.

laythor 03-24-2009 02:03 AM

did that quote come with a tube of KY lubricant?

red8gt 03-24-2009 09:41 AM

hahaha thanks for the advice guys... i'm going to call mazda and tell them i'll be picking up the car today and getting the job done some place else.

Hopefully somewhere around here has some experience with rx8's :)

Peppy@kacework 03-24-2009 10:05 AM

If you can't do a brake job yourself, it should only cost a 6 pack and a pizza(plus the cost of parts.) There's got to be someone around you tat can give you a hand. Post in your local forum and see if anyone is willing to help.

Jedi54 03-24-2009 11:52 AM

$1600?! Did they ask you to grab your ankles? ;)

As most here have mentioned, that is extremely overpriced. I purchased ceramic pads, drilled / slotted rotors, and SS brakes lines for less the HALF of that.
What exactly do you need done?

Unfortunately 'brake jobs' are one of the most over-priced things you can have done on your car. It really is quite simple, but dealerships make a killing on them.
Either get a few friends to help you or you could always look at a place like Midas. That might cost you $200 - $300 but at least that's better then the dealership

red8gt 03-24-2009 12:40 PM

all they told me was that i needed new pads and rotors on the front and rear. He also told me that he's only charging me 100bux in labour which by the sounds of it is complete BS.

I have a couple shops around me looking into it so hopefully they come back with a better price.

laythor 03-24-2009 12:53 PM

The sad thing is that he's probably only charging you 100 bucks in labor.. what the dealership charges for the parts is just crazy.

carbonRX8 03-24-2009 12:53 PM

Would you mind posting the dealer's name and city?

Highway8 03-24-2009 01:02 PM

$1600 that is rediculous, front brakes are super easy, rear brakes are only a little harder because you need a special brake tool but ti can be rented for free from most auto parts stores. For the parts check my for sale thread. https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-parts-sale-wanted-44/stock-parts-sale-off-07-6mt-low-miles-suspension-clutch-flywheel-more-169601/

Front and rear rotors with very low miles plus front pads for a total of $155 delivered.

RIWWP 03-24-2009 01:03 PM

Definitely post up where you are located at least. I am positive that there are some people within reasonable driving distance willing to help you out for a 6-pack and some food.

kersh4w 03-24-2009 01:26 PM

post where you are located, if you are in the DC area, i'll help you do it for free.

Thanks for the offers guys, actually found somebody today who is doing it for 800.

I live around Newmarket, Ontario and was quoted that price from Newmarket Mazda.

I know i'm still overpaying at 800 (taxes and labour included) but it's a mechanic that i know and trust so i'm ok paying that (especially after the 1st quote). Atleast i learned that i will not be returning to the dealership for parts :)

thanks again for the help

Juansito 03-25-2009 02:50 AM

800? Are you crazy?

That's 2 much.......

636 03-25-2009 03:52 AM

Ummm i do like brake jobs in less then 20 minutes... >_>. Do them yourself bro?

Let me know if you ever need anything. I mean ANYTHING! Milk, eyedrops, brake pads...I will get them and ship them to you!!! Pronto.

I have a flat rate of $500 for any item. I know that is a little high, but as you apparently dont CARE that you are getting shafted, I figure it is all good.

Enjoy the pounding.

kersh4w 03-25-2009 11:29 PM

Ok guys I know all of you have the skills- do you also
Have the will? I'm freaking out,my son's brake pads have fallen
OFF.... he tells me they are quoting an outrageous amt. $ to
Repair pads and rotors. Can anyone in the Tulsa area tell me where to take his to get this done? Without the shaft-or KY please? Thank you

FateGR 10-21-2014 06:17 AM

I recently changed my old rotors and brake pads for slotted & dimpled rotors and brembo brake pads all around + DOT 5.1 brake fluid.

I didn't pay more than 700 USD (550 euro!)

Star09 10-27-2014 09:11 PM

I just bought my first RX8. Where do I get OEM brake pads and rotors? Any parts store?

Thank you in advance!

If you really want OEM (like in a box printed "Mazda"), you go to the dealer, but you can get OE-spec parts at any parts store for much less. It might even be the same parts as OEM just in different boxes.

Dokuji 03-21-2015 10:12 PM

The real shame about these kinds of threads is how incompotent and/or willfully dishonest and shameless a lot of dealerships are about these cars. Tell them to F right off and give them a negative review online stating why. This garbage needs to stop.

Edit.. oh wow threadsurrection.. :lol2:
