how fast can you go on stock potenza tires and parking procedure

i was wondering how fast anyone here has gone on the stock bridgstone potenza tires.
i was also wondering, when you park in your 6mt. do you leave it in first and pull the ebrake or do you just pull the ebrake? is there any reason why i should do it a certain way? leave in first, dont leave in first?

expo1 10-27-2006 08:03 AM

About 120 at Watkins Glenn on the the OEM's
You never want to just use the ebrake! There are threads about cars rolling away on people that just use the ebrake and this is not just a RX-8 thing. Put it in 1st when parking on an incline, reverse when parking on a decline. Also get into the habit of looking at your shifter when starting. The dealership could park your car in gear which can be interesting if you don't know about it when starting.

yiksing 10-27-2006 08:34 AM

^^Like he said check the shifter when starting, I was a victim of an accident where my 8 crash my other car when I start the car from the outside. Bad result

GoesLikeStink 10-27-2006 10:12 AM

ammm...do you not have to depress the clutch in order to start the car? Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but I would have thought it was standard everywhere.

That way we cannot start the car in gear by accident...ever.

Yes we also have to depress the clutch. But if its in gear and your don't know that . When the clutch is released BAMM / FLOOD etc.

My car won't start unless I press the clutch in being it in gear or in neutral.

silverwolf 10-27-2006 11:07 PM

well i dont think you have many options there. i would imagin you would have to be either in a gear or in neutral. unless the 8 has a special setting?......

ca18detsilvia 10-27-2006 11:36 PM

i've been 150mph on the stock tires.

as far as parking, when i'm on level ground i only use the e-break but if i'm on any sort of an incline or decline i put it in gear. i had a bad experience when i was over at at a lady friends house and her street has a pretty good incline, it was about 1am or so when i walked out the front door, it was very dark no street lights. and i didn't see my car out front, at first i thought someone had stolen it or something cuz i didn't see it down the street, then i unlocked it and saw blinking orange lights in a yard 3 houses down. it didn't it anything and didn't mess up the yard, i was really lucky, the e-brake was up but it had one or two more clicks left to go. it must have rolled slowly cuz the brake was up pretty good, but from then on i always put it in gear if i'm parking on unlevel ground!!!!!!

LionZoo 10-28-2006 02:38 AM

I use 2nd gear, am I the only one that does?

i use first or second, depending on the last gear i was in before turning the car off.

silverwolf 10-28-2006 09:10 AM

k so if the fron of your car is parked head up a hill use first. if headed down use reverse.

Aseras 10-28-2006 09:26 AM

ive gone over 160 on the stock potenzas...

120 on VIR's main straight. Also, if you've taken it to the track, NEVER set your e-brake when you get off the track. There are potential issues with boiling brake fluid and warping rotors.

Edit: Actually I had the OE Dunlops. Wonderful tires while they lasted.

Torchmonkey 10-28-2006 09:59 AM

135+ several times, often 125+ on Interstate straightaways, on worn originals (4/32)...baby gets a new set for Christmas. Even had one patched...no problems.

vdelvec 10-28-2006 12:23 PM

I've been 135mph on stock Dunlop 8090's. They are AWESOME tires but unfortunately cost an arm and a leg to replace.

silverwolf 10-28-2006 01:27 PM

awsome i appreciate that. when i get my 8 this week i wanted to open it up but i didnt know what would be safe. good to know thanks alot.

Paul_in_DC 10-28-2006 03:26 PM

Also, the tires are 'W' rated, which means their maximum speed is 168 mph.

JeRKy 8 Owner 10-28-2006 05:23 PM

Down here I rarely park on a road that isn't flat, so I almost never put it in gear when applying parking brake.

CarAndDriver 10-28-2006 06:47 PM

I put the car in gear and use the e-brake when I park, just in case it gets hit hard (hopefully not) or the e-brake fails.

You can go as fast as your tire rating recommends.

ca18detsilvia 10-28-2006 06:48 PM

NO forced induction, just a long stretch of highway, and yes i know its not the smartest thing to do, but i will say that there were no other cars on the road. being NA the car doesnt wana go past 150 to save its life, haha, been there or close a few times though

silverwolf 10-29-2006 03:34 PM

well it will be interesting to see how FL heat in sumer (or this cold winter we may have) will effect its top speed or acceleration.
darwin may have been right.

i have seen 142 on about a 3 mile straight in controlled conditions... i doubt 150 can be done na...

beers

ca18detsilvia 10-29-2006 07:13 PM

i've actually hit 150 about 3 or 4 times, and no FI, it did seem like it took forever past 140, and it was over a couple mile stretch

Nopstnz 10-29-2006 07:35 PM

swoope 10-29-2006 07:58 PM

right i got it..

beers

swoope 10-29-2006 08:26 PM

i am calling bs on this whole top speed thing... it is drag limited.. and yes i can tell you what the top speed with my mods are.... and the rpms and gear it was in....

i can also tell you when the front end got light and when it settled down... with stock shocks and lower springs and d specs..

silverwolf.. your comment about the redline is just stupid...

btw, did you get an rx8 as of 10/18. not so much.

beers

BoosTED 10-29-2006 08:44 PM

Ah come on he was joking.

Mine is NA and I have had it up to 150 up hill on a corner..

A recent coat of wax helps with the drag and pulling the mirrors in. :bootyshak

It is possible in 5th, 6th without mods will not make it there tops around 148 mph.

The rpms in 5th are at redline at that speed. :Eyecrazy:

so you have an rx8 now?

i am a helpful guy. in moderation.. i give good pm and not so good with people hanging them selves

go figure..

Nopstnz 10-29-2006 09:26 PM

Swoope, I believe the rpms were around 9500 or so. Straight, open, empty road. Clear skies, no wind, early march. 70 degrees. Isn't fuel cut out at 9700? Right when I hit 145-146 everything got suddenly louder and I lost my nerve and backed it down. Can you get 6th gear that fast? I read somewhere the 6th will cut out over 6750 rpms or something. Power mods were rb intake w/ ram air and exhaust.

silverwolf 10-29-2006 09:30 PM

no thats not to say i have it. its always the little things that get in the way of the big picture. go figure its just as the history books said.
and what

swoope 10-29-2006 09:31 PM

yes,

t-run/8

you have most of it right... except for the rpm.... 6 gear is not for high speed runs...

staticlag 10-29-2006 09:48 PM

The fastest I have ever gone is in 5th gear at the rev limiter, on a small downhill slope, probably could have gone faster if I would have shifted to 6th seeing as it was downhill, and maybe if I hadn't had another person in the car. But I was at 156 mph without the pullies and flywheel.

I can hit 150 pretty easily now on flat ground, but the trouble is finding a long enough secluded stretch to go faster than that.

swoope 10-29-2006 09:57 PM

well,

guess that has it covered...

Right now just short of 2 years unless something comes up that I can't pass on. Or I find a worm hole and a way to travel back in time to get everything done sooner.

:D: Driving east will get a faster speed.

mpr4life624 11-02-2006 12:05 AM

Even though I don't think this thread should be where I post my first message...lol. I've hit 125 mph on stock Potenza's that were almost completely bald. Looking back on it, it wasn't the smartest thing I've done, but I had to open it up sometime right??

PerSmitt 11-02-2006 02:33 AM

I have done almost 150 in third gear.

Oh you were talking mph ;-)
