I found a few other threads on this..not exactly my specific question was answered however.

Question: how does our tpms work? (I have an 06). I have a set of rims without tpms and am sick of the idiot light going off..can I make a canister and pressurize it to out correct psi with our sensors in it or do they have to physically be on each wheel? I know the canister works on certain makes of car and figured it would be much easier to do this..

you can also purchase TPMS straps. They strap the sensor inside the wheel. You'd have to take the tire off to put them on but then you get the benefit of actually having a sensor to tell you if the pressure is low and the light goes away. they cost about 20 bucks.
