help!! broken rear wheel stud
i accidently over torqued the stock wheel lock and broke it. a small portion of the wheel lock was stuck and wouldnt come off. there was no way to take it off but to drill the wheel stud until theres no thread left. after that i have ordered a new wheel stud from www.onlinemazdaparts.com. and now i found out that theres not enough clearance to hit the broken stud out or install the new stud back on the rear hub. so if i remove the rear hub, would i need to replace the bearing? and if so, is installing the bearing hard or do i have to bring it to a shop? and will anyother things break?

i would suggest not doing this yourself because there are special factory tools needed for the hub, etc.....me, kel, bxb40 attempted this on kel's car and it was not working unless you took apart half the rear suspension or shaves half the head off the bolt to slip it in the assembley...good luck and take it to a dealer....it aint worth you messing more parts up......and be prepared to pay ludicrous amounts

You have to remove the front and rear spindles and support them around the lugs to remove the stock ones... You can press them out or hit them with a hammer carefully; you cannot hit them with a hammer or put impact pressure on the bearings as you will destroy the bearings and the bearing chase... I have replaced a stud on my 91 MR2 before and one trick I found useful to take the stud out is to use a C-Clamp in combination with a socket. Put the socket on the back of the stud and make sure the socket has a big enough hole for the stud to go in when you use the C-clamp on end of the socket and the end of the stud. You can then close the c-clamp to push the stud into the socket. Once the stud is loose, you should be able to take it out with your hand.
Edit: Now I realize that the RX-8 disc is so much bigger than the MR-2's. This trick might not help at all. Also, not sure if there is a hole from behind that allow access to the stud. |

The brake rotor comes off leaving the hub and studs. ;)

yes but there is aluminum behind it and you cant get the studs out from a straight angle...you either need to drill/shave part of the head off the stud or do it the right way and dismantle the entire assembly....you will not get the stud out otherwise because of a bad angle

A little over a year ago I had to do a front and rear stud. The front was cake and I thought I did the rear just as easy, again long time ago not sure. I did look at the rear over the weekend and the only thing I can come up with is I pulled the rear caliper and fished it in there. You can look at my rear hub/suspension and see none of the bolts have had a wrench on them, everything looks brand new and no one else has ever worked on the car. Next time I have to replace one I will take some notes/pics. Wish I could say for sure how I did it. Guess it is magic just like my rear shock install :)

well thanks for everybody's help!! i really appreciate it! well now i have decided to take the whole hub off since i found someone with the tools to do it. i just hope that this will finally get rid of the head ache ive been having and make my baby look flawless again. haha
