Front Brakes Calipers
 

Hi all ~~

I've searched the forum a bit but I didn't mange to find such a topic.
If there is, please just drop me a link.

I am looking for aftermarket calipers to my 2004 HP 8 but I have troube with finding any.
I found ones on Racing Brake web but they are 4 port and 550$ !!!
Thats sick, 550$ for Calipers :O

I'm looking for something a bit cheaper (is it possible ?:O) and better looking than the stock ones.

Any links or hints are appreciated, thanks.

You might be interested in those FAKE caliper covers on Ebay and use the rest of the money on better pads and rotors.

You think it's a good idea to cheap out on something as important as your brakes...Something that is made to stop your car...

If they are cheap, they are probably cheaply made and not what you want to put on your car...

Cheap front bumper is one thing....Cheap brake calipers are something that you shouldn't be looking for...

But I am not looking for BBKs, I already have the rotors and the pads.
Just wanted to exchange the stock calipers.

It's not like I wish to get them cheap.
I've got a DBA 4000 rotros and Porterfield R4-1 pads, costed a bit.
So it's not like I am looking for something extra cheap, it's just that 500$ for calipers ? They are 4 port as the stock ones, i don't think they will brake any better than the stock ones and they cost a lot more i think.

It's just that the price is not equivalent to the quality in my opinion.


BtW. any idea if the calipers from Evo VII / VIII / IX or STI will fit p&p ?

stockers are single piston sliders

your braking system on the 8 is already better than more cars, unless your really fast you probably wouldn't gain any time on track with just aftermarket calipers, they mostly just reduce fade anyways. Plus if you change your calipers you're gonna have to change your pads too to match = more money.

The racing brakes are made of aluminum i believe, and much lighter than the cast iron stock calipers, they are well worth the 500 asking price.

And not from experience but just hearsay OEM brembos from evos and sti dont work as well as thier aftermarket counterparts

n had to check some facts,

don't quote me but i think if their rotor thickness is similar to ours you probably just need to fab some brackets and lines to get them to fit, not that I'm saying its a good idea or anything

Alternative

Get some brake paint and paint the caliper and the dust shield behind the rotor.
This will cost a bit of work and <$100
Or remove the calipers and have them powder coated.

Search for threads on painted calipers.
You can get graphics/stencils from Polak Graphics to customize the look.

It's called a soshinoya badge. In japan its used to identify rookie drivers on the road.

At least in japan it served a purpose - here in america it's abused as a trend.

Well seems like I'd need to stick with the stock ones untill I'm done with the Porterfield RS4-1.
Would suck if they wouldn't fit to a 500$ caliper :O


Well that's an idea but i've fried my calipers (or at least the left one) and I need to exchange them to new ones.
So I just thought I can get some cool ones, better than the stock.
But seems like I will need to get the stock ones anyways ;/

What is your goal or objective? If it is performance, I would suggest to you that your not currently getting the most out of the stock braking system. If your goal is performance, save your money.

If your goal is cosmetic, that's another story. The stock RX8 brakes are phenom. We have been racing them for years with various DOT and R compound race tires. I'll suggest to you that we've testing these with Slicks again and again and they have held up. This is FAR, FAR more demanding than any street tire. Hopefully that was helpful

It's a simple thing to rebuild a caliper if it isn't corroded inside it's only an O-ring and a dust boot. We've rebuilt the OEM calipers on our Mitusubishi Lemons racer twice after races. As Eric Meyer said the RX8 has robust OEM brakes that will handle racing with R-compound tires with just a pad change. Yeah the dust boots might melt after a long race but that's a cheap fix. Spend your money on something else.

To my knowledge Racing Brake will not sell just the Calipers as a replacement for OEM.

Brake are something never to cheap out on. Save up and buy smart

A couple years back I spoke to a RB rep. about just the calipers and was told that they only sold them as replacement/ or as package with their rotors. Either I was mis informed by the rep or RB has made some consideration to a full range of customers braking needs.

btw... the $550 is NOT for the set of 2 calipers... That is the price for 1!!

and from speaking first hand on having those 4 pot calipers.. they are worth it if you want a performance upgrade.

Doesn't matter really. The OEM rotors are too thin to use them, the OEM pads are over, and now the left front caliper is damaged.

Yeah I know that the stock brakes are doing quite fine but:
1)I would like to try something different to have a better knowledge of the brake topic in RX-8 and I would like to compare some stuff to the OEM one.
2)As above, the OEM ones are over, need to replace them anyway and they are more expensive than any good aftermarket ones.

Well i've finished my caliper cuz the pad was over and the caliper started to grate the rotor - so now it's my only brake.
I am not sure if this can be fixed... even if so I don't think I wish to do so.
I wouldn't like them to fail at 160 mph.

I would like to have a BBK but it's a bit too expenisve for me.
I already got the pads and rotors. I am not from the US, I will have a lot of difficulties to sell them in my country for a resonable price + i've just ordered some other stuff that I needed to exchange for over 700$ and I've just bought a 5MT from the FD3S.
I'm kind of shot on $$ :mad:

I wouldn't also like to over invest the car.
I'm planning to sell it before next winter to get an Evo.
If I will invest too much, I won't get that back after selling the car ;/

I will just buy a used caliper for now to replace the broken one and we will see how it goes from there with the new rotors / pads and steel lines.

Get the RacingBrake front kit or STFU ....

Here's another though I have been kicking around in my head for a while. Has anyone looked at swapping MS3 brakes onto an 8? I have not looked into this fully, but I would not be surprised if the mounting brackets bolted right up (I know it works this way on the regular 3). IIRC the rotors are .1 inch smaller, but the calipers are much bigger. This would provide a more aggressive look. I would not expect there to be any performance increase, at least none that would be noticeable on the street. The MS3 front brakes are HUGE when compared to the RX8 side by side. Another difference is that the MS3 guys are able to run many 16 inch wheels, so for those looking to run a smaller wheel for the weight reduction, reduced cost of rubber, or gearing advantage, this might be another bonus.

I know that I will never get into a situation where the stock brakes are not good enough as long as I keep decent pads on the car, but the backyard mechanic in me keeps me interested in this idea.

Has anyone else researched this? Any thoughts?
