Frequency of tire replacement.
 

I bought the falcon 452s this past july and managed to wear 2 of them out in 4000 kms, 1200 of which was highway. I don't drift the car or ride it that hard except on the special occasion. I was etxremely disappointed. Has anyone else had the same problem?


My options right now are to replace the 2 tires that are completely bald to go with the 2 in the front which seem untouched vor go with a new brand and replace all four. I live in montreal, and I want to know if anybody has a recomendation on tires that will last longer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yokohama AVS ES 100's lasted me about 30 000km and that’s driving aggressively with a few runs at the drag strip. I rotate my tires every oil change.

tire wear is very dependent on how you drive your car. Here's my tires:

OEM bridgestones- 19,000 (rears were pretty low and LOUD)
Kumho MX's - 20,000. (driven MUCH more agressively)
Toyo T1R's - ask me in about 15,000 miles...

Thats really low mileage for any street tire. Let alone a tire rated at 300 treadwear. My stock bridgestones lasted 16000 miles before I replaced them.

My 2 guesses as far as why they wore out would be:

1. Since you are in Montreal the winter will be pretty damn cold. These tires aren't all seasons so during the colder months, they will get hard and wear much faster than they normally would. Driving on snow can also have an acellerated wear effect on summer tires. This wear combined with an overly aggressive right foot can kill your tires very quickly.

2. You are lying, and you do beat on them. Now I am not on here to say you are lying, I am going to take your word that you are being truthful unless I am proven wrong. I will say that it seems highly unlikely that the fronts have no wear and the rears are done in such a short time unless you do drive very agressively most of the time.

or maybe your alignment is totaly way off....i seen perople put 10k miles of wear in only a few k miles just by having a crappy wheel alignment...when ever i get new tires on any car i find it to be a good idea to do an alignment at the same time jus for assurance...hell it only 60 bux....better than wearing out a nice pair of $500+ tires prematurely....

how were the tires worn out, inside?, outside? completely bald?

^ Yeah, another option to look at is definitely the alignment. Make sure its within specs before putting on new tires.

i have the Falken FK452's as well, and with 17,000 miles on them i still have 1/2 of my treads left on all 4 tires.

should last me through 2008 before I need to get new tires for next year.

and yes I track my car on these exact tires, so they should last WAYYYY more than 4000km ;)

If your worried about tire wear buty a high milage tire.

Juice, i don't drive on these tires in winter, in montreal, I wouldn't get anywhere without a second set of winters. Thats actually when i found out about the wear. I was changing my tires and the guy next to me said that i must have had a good time cause the back 2 tires were completely bald. I had to stop myself from flipping out, looking at them. the temperature was low, around freezing for about 2-3weeks before i changed the tires, but the sheer amount of wear can't just be due to that short a period.

I'm beginning to think there may be an alignment problem, but i'm surprised, I thought alignment was strictly a front wheel issue.

you have FOUR wheels, each wheels needs to be aligned properly for optimum tire traction and handling behavior

I think thats wrong......I believe the colder/harder the tire, the tire does not wear faster, and the exact opposite, it wears super slow....

I'm sorry to contradict you, but that is the way it is.

Since the temperature drops and hardens tires that weren't meant for the winter months, they will lose traction. This lost traction is what will wear the tires. Its not something that you notice during everyday driving, unless it is really really cold, but it is there. It is compounded by the fact that roads aren't smooth. The harder the tire, the less it will conform to the tiny imperfections on the road and grip it. This lost grip and the natural roughness of the road is like doing burnouts on sandpaper.

Winter tires on the other hand will not freeze, or get hard in the winter. This enables them to conform to the roads surface and grip it much more. There will be no lost traction and it will wear much better.

Snow is also a big factor in tire wear for any rubber compound. Snow is made up of tiny crystals. This is contrary to popular belief, very demanding of the tires. If you were to look at it from a microscopic level, it would be like driving over very small shards of glass. Winter tires will wear quicker on snow but not as fast as summers will. The reason that there are specific tires for winter is split 50/50 because of their temperature resitsance (good for dry cold roads), and also the fact that their tread patterns will grip the snow better than large tread blocks found on summer tires.

I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I can, but that is the basic idea of why summer tires wear faster in the cold than in the warm.

I figured you wouldn't be driving on them during the winter, but I had to make sure.

I would definitely get an alignment done and have it set back to factory specs. This will at least eliminate one thing from the list of possible causes, and is good insurance from having it happen again.

Like ZoomZoomH said, there are 4 wheels and they all need to be checked.

are you a 100% sure you are the only one to have driven this car? cause to me it sounds like someone has had a lot of fun smoking the back tires off.
