D2 Racing Coilovers

2 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone:)

I was thinking about changing the suspension of my car with aftermarket coilovers. I tried searching under 'coilovers' but numerous threads came up, and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I have seen some products in person and I was leaning towards the heavily discussed Tein flex with the EDFC option, which is very useful.

However, I was talking the other day with another 8 owner (he is very experienced in car modifications and has a shop of his own) and he told me that he has tested another product, unknown to me since then, the D2 coilovers. He said he had the teins on his car as we spoke and that he will change them with the D2, because the handling was superior... Also, they are lighter (made from aluminium), 36way adjustable and cost less (not big difference though). Has anyone tried the D2 before or driven a car with them on?

Furthermore, I've read about other great products like the HKS Hypermax, the JIC coilvers, the MS and RB springs/shocks and others that don't come in my mind right now.
I thought I can use this thread to hear poeple's opinions and impressions about setups they've used, compare them to stock suspension, share experiences that were good or not, so that we can all help ourselves find the appropriate coilover that matches our expectations:)

p.s. I attached pics of the D2s if you haven't seen them...

iam in the market for coilovers right now,i think these look way better then the teins that i was thinking of getting plus these ccome with a knob to adjust the lowering from what i see in the picture.how much are these anyways ????

RotorManiac 01-15-2005 02:42 PM

They are about in the same price range with the teins alone, not with the edfc option.
I'm not sure, but I think I saw them at about $1300...

However what caught my attention, is the fact that they are made from an aluminium alloy, called ERGAL, which is quite light...

smrx8 01-15-2005 02:48 PM

thats weird rx8 garage was charging me 699 for the tein coilovers

RotorManiac 01-15-2005 03:08 PM

Wow, I've never heard such a low price for the teins. Are you sure you are talking about the Flex series?

smrx8 01-15-2005 04:17 PM

Oh i didnt know there theres diffrent ones.there a set on ebay for 1300 so i figure it was the same as hes telling me. whats the difference anyways between them????

smrx8, sorry but I don't know more details... however they are made for different purposes, so I guess the ride quality will be much different too.

I also found an advertisement for the "D2 racing coilovers" in a magazine. It says it is a pretty new company making aftermarket products, and that it is offered with 3 different set of springs, 3 to 13kgr/mm.
Finally it points out that, with this coilover, the spring preload and camber can be adjusted.

Is there an expert here, that can comment on the last statement, I haven't heard it before. How can these figures be adjusted?

p.s. has anyone tried this product?

Kain 01-17-2005 01:23 PM

I have the HKS and I LOVE them!!!!!!!

smrx8 01-17-2005 01:46 PM

how much for the hks ???

Kain 01-17-2005 01:56 PM

If I remember right I paid around 1600 for them.

TooBIG 01-17-2005 01:56 PM

I have the Mazdaspeed springs/shock/sway bars.
I also have 19" rims with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.

I highly recommend any suspension upgrades.
The handling is sick now, and lowering the ride height looks awesome.

TooBIG, thanks for the input my friend:)

Kain, tell us more about the HKS. I'd love to hear more about it. Ride, comfort, cornering... anything;)

Kel Rx8 01-18-2005 12:45 PM

tein has 2 coilovers
1) tein flex -$1300
2) tein basic coilover -$699

smrx8 01-18-2005 01:45 PM

oh ok i saw a set on ebayfor 1339 and i thought rx8 garage was giving me the same set.he qoted me 699 is there a big difference ???

RotorManiac 01-19-2005 01:49 PM

hmmm, the D2's must be very new then. nobody says anything about them... maybe the only way to check if they are good is to buy them:(

also forgot to mention that in the magazine the price tag is 1200euros. they sound interesting...

Flex has adjustable damping, the Basic does not. Both are height adjustable. Flex has a tad higher spring rate and a pillowball upper mount for the fronts.

Can you explain this? I'm not sure I can understand what you mean exactly...

rotaryred 01-20-2005 06:03 PM

I have jic's and they are great 10/7 spring rate.

Labop 01-20-2005 08:13 PM

according to what I found on a website selling teins:

"The OEM rubber bush (bushing?) is replaced with a pillow ball which eliminates the load input compliance,"

"reduces the change of alignment to improve the grip of the tire."

I think this last bit refers to changing the camber. I think that's a page that's poorly translated into english, here's an excerpt from another site regarding HKS pillowballs. I think it's safe to assume the pillowball performs the same function regardless of how well the marketing lingo is written. But the one below seems easier to understand.

"In a vehicle's suspension, the upper mounts connect the strut or shock assembly to the vehicles body. Most factory mounts are constructed from soft rubber or plastic and are designed with ride comfort as a priority. Under spirited driving conditions, the factory mounts can flex and distort, hindering the performance of the shock absorber or strut. This may cause the vehicle to lose traction and steering response."

"The HKS Pillowball Upper Mounts are constructed of the highest quality aluminum and steel for maximum strength and are engineered to enhance the ability of your high performance suspension. All HKS suspension components are designed to stand up to even the most severe road and/or track conditions. Some applications have adjustable camber plates built into the Pillowball Mounts to assist with fine-tuning of the suspension."

Great explanation Labop. Thanks, I wasnt to sure on it either.

Labop 01-21-2005 09:27 AM

Yeah, I'm trying to educate myself on things BEFORE I dream of slapping them on my car... ;)

These D2's look pretty good. Not sure what I'll go with. I won't be able to mod mine for another 6 months.

RotorManiac 01-21-2005 10:12 AM

Labop, good info.Dark8 says in his post that the teins have also a pillowball upper mount for the fronts. And what I'm looking for is weight.

You say the HKS is completely made from aluminium so is light.
A friend that has the teins said the whole coilover felt quite heavier than stock. Combined with the edfc, I think its gonna be even worse. The D2, however, are aluminium, so they are light and at a very competitice price, because the HKS product is a bit overpriced, for me
The problem is that the info we have on the D2's is limited...:o

smrx8 01-21-2005 10:41 AM

Wow happy you posted that because i was going to go with tein flex series.

RotorManiac 01-21-2005 12:44 PM

Look, I'm not saying that the teins are not good. I think they are one of the best. In fact I haven't deleted them yet from my list. I was ready to buy them too, then I heard about the D2. I just like lightweight products, that's all. And the person I mentioned didn't weigh them, just held the two shocks on both hands...

smrx8 01-21-2005 12:58 PM

Ok i been trying to find a place who sales the d2, do you know of any?
