Anyone Replaced their brake pads?

I need to replace My front pads as there is a high pitched squeel when the brakes are first applied.
Question: Can anyone advise me on the best make? ie EBC, Hawk, Centric...ect? I'd also like to go with drilled and slotted rotor eventually so I'll appreciate any advise on them too!
Thanks,
ice

what do you want for pads? how is the car being used? My track pads squeal like a pig until they are warm and are brand new.

IcemanX8 06-20-2007 09:43 AM

why are drilled/slotted rotors a bad idea>

mac11 06-20-2007 09:46 AM

drilled rotors crack under pressure if not setup properly. It also takes away from the surface area of the rotor. You have less material to absorb the heat that is being generated.

dmp 06-20-2007 09:49 AM

If you don't mind dust - Axis Ultimates are FANTASTIC pads. :)

mysql101 06-20-2007 09:51 AM

depends on where you buy the rotors from. cheap ebay stuff can easily crack during track use.

i like the hawk ceramic pads, got them from tirerack for about 140 shipped for all 4, no noise, low dust.

reaper1 06-20-2007 09:53 AM

There's TBS on this matter [ RX8 Service Bulletin ] . Go to finish Line Web there is something in regards to squeal noise during braking. If you take it to them with that print out they should take care of it for you.

If you do a search you will notice you're not the only one with this matter.

TeamRX8 06-20-2007 01:09 PM

cheap advice - free

decent brake fluid - $20

Hawk Ceramic brake pads - $65/axle

Searching the forum to avoid looking like the typical dumb@ss n00b - priceless

Not to completely derail this thread, but is there a mileage limit to this TSB? Didn't see anything mentioned while reading it but, my car is an 04 with 30k miles on it. Any chance they would dismiss my break squeal to brake pad age?

ditto, get pad, quiet, low dust, and a good price.

Oh and cross drilled rotors are fine, that guy is just trying to show off his track knowledge. If you're just a normal street cruiser like most of us then drilled rotors will be perfectly fine (just get them from the proper place, like one of the forum vendors of this site.)

I agree with many, the Hawk ceramic is the best.

I would give it a try . Take in the TSB and tell them you've had this issue for quite sometime, that you feel this is the reason for your squealing brakes. You have nothing to loose.

RotorManiac 06-21-2007 03:21 PM

I use EBC yellow stuff right now. no noise at all and low dust...
I like them more than my previous MS pads. got them for 140euros...

Razz1 06-21-2007 11:50 PM

Porterfield Carbon Kevlar.

Rotary Rasp 06-21-2007 11:57 PM

I have ebc in the front and I love them. No dust and no noise.

I had problems with Porterfield.

kinchu007 06-25-2007 08:51 PM

Anyone running Endless CC-X ?

92tsiawd 06-25-2007 09:53 PM

I didn't like my EBC reds that I had, they had good initial bite but they lasted a little longer than 1500 miles, that's inclusive of two LAPPING days, they would have lasted probably one Solo 1 event had I been competing. I can vouch for Project Mu's Taitan Kai pads and Hawk HP+, Project Mu had the longest life and is really quiet, whereas after the first solo event on HP+, they squeeled loud but their life seems really good, I didn't put a dent into them.

Toly 06-26-2007 04:39 PM

Carbotech. Bobcats. Warmed up.

BlueRenesis82 06-26-2007 07:46 PM

I swap brake pads and rotors quite a bit. I don't mind using some AutoZone OEM replacements for the street, I run Carbotech XP-8's for track

Yup it's called the warranty. 4 years or 50K miles. You still have time if you act quickly.

No they won't dismiss it. They have a TSB for it and a replacement brake pad part number.

How do you know your pads are worn? Check them and see how much pad is left. You may be able to get them replaced under warranty. Or you may need to put some anti-vibration stuff on the backs of the pads.

Pretty steep...$400 + tax if you buy them as a F-R set.

I know, I know, but I loved the CC-R's...I want something like those that I can still use on the street.

Anyone wanna buy a set of used CC-R's for a 2004+ STi? Only used for one track day at Willow Springs :)

shaunv74 06-28-2007 06:26 PM

$400!!

Umm... my axxess ultimates were $100 for all 4.

Hope you can tell the difference.:)

I imagine that's why Porsche uses them.

I imagine that you missed the key word..."properly"...

shaunv74 06-30-2007 11:57 AM

The stock rotors are plenty powerful enough with good pads. If you really want to improve your braking performance get wider tires.

A good test: if you set off your ABS under hard braking on flat dry pavement you need more tire not more brakes.

Porsche uses them because the " high performance" drivers that buy there cars think they are better. Same with Ferrari and a few others that come to mind. They don't do it cause they work better....only because they are expected to have them. At best they are lighter.....

Ask any Porsche driver that tracks his car a lot how the OEM drilled rotors last.

I was lucky to get 15K miles out of the ones on my 911...and that was with no track days

For new car sales, yes.

At the track, in the upper competitive series, you'll see these on:

Obvious overkill for the purposes of this thread. Drilled are fine for street driving if bling is desired.

Cheers.

I'm seriously turned on by that...for real...like, I'm not kidding...brb...

Silver_Surfer 06-30-2007 06:48 PM

Had brake noises. After I inspected the pads. There were alot of pad life left so I applied BG stop squeal on them and brakes are ok so far(500+ miles).

kinchu007 06-30-2007 11:11 PM

Team, I asked about the CC-X's in other threads as well and no one seeems to have tried them...I got tired of waiting, I have a deadline.

Clueless the script, sounds more like: angry, has nothing positive to contribute.

$100 worth of dust?

http://www.miata.net/products/perform/axxis.html

Not trying to defend myself...I know $400 is a bit much, but at least recommend something cheaper that's as good.

kinchu007 06-30-2007 11:32 PM

I guess I am being defensive...I apologize...what I meant to say was yes I sure as hell hope that I can tell a difference :)

staticlag 07-01-2007 01:10 AM

do the hawk ceramics have more stopping power than OEM? Or are they simply a low noise/dust alternative?

Supposedly same performance as Hawk HP+ but without the noise and dust...

I was thinking of trying them out after my HP+'s go...

Then I'll give my review from a track event...

Yup they make a lot of dust but they work great on the street and for track days. And I have $300 left over to spend on wheel cleaner.:) To me that's cheaper and just as good.

JAT1 07-01-2007 03:17 AM

have a look at Project MU. they have a decent range and all work really well.
