Another coilover thread
OK so I've been reading a bit on the forum about wich coilovers are good and wich aren't... and I'm still a bit lost.
First of all, I don't want those D2/Megan Racing/Ksport cheap coilovers. The car is a daily driver, but I will track a lot this this summer (casual tracking, no competition). I've been offered HSD HR for 1200$CAD landed & taxes in. Price is very appealing, but I have a hard time to get feedback on those coilovers... are they yet another cheap replica or it's a great bang for the buck? They doesn't seem very popular here, it's hard to get unbiased opinions because people will bash what they don't know. I was also looking at BC's or Stance since they are very popular here, would you recommend them? They're a bit tricky to get in Canada but nothing is impossible. I found BC's BR for 1000$US + free shipping at the border, good deal? Stance's GR+ seems to be around 1300ish$US + shipping. Or even Tanabe Sustec Pro 5 for 1200$? Are Teins (Flex) worth it? Are you mainly paying for the name? They are 1500ish but I'm pretty sure they can be compared to other brands selling for cheaper. Now about spring rate, seems to be generally around 8k/6k or 9k/7k except for the Stance which are 10k/7k. What should I be looking for? Also I'm pretty sure all coilovers named here have pillowball mounts, if not please correct me. If there is anything else important I forgot to verify please yell at me :cwm27: Any comments or suggestions about a brand or a specific coilover are welcome! |
i heard multiple times that KWV3 are the best out there! they're just a little pricey, but you know what they say. GO BIG OR GO HOME!
|
^KW's would be a better choice than all the ones you have listed. But I feel like the Bistein PSS9 with some stiffer spring rates(The rates they come with are a bit soft) would be a great option for you. Very comfy on the street yet they have the dampning you need for the track. They are also reasonably priced between $1300 and $1500.
|
Yep KW V3 are great, but in my opinion they are overkill for what i'm going to do. I'll take a look at th PSS9
|
PSS9 seems to be a very odd coilover... low spring rate in the front with helper coil and progressive in the rear and it uses the stock mounts. Wouldn't a pillowball mount be better?

Take a read through this thread, any questions you have about the PSS9 have already been answered there.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...highlight=pss9 Since you know what you are talking about, have you ever tried PSS9 on a 8? I read you had Stance GR+ and didn't like them, so PSS9 > Stance GR+ ? Very appreciated :icon_tup: |
I have not personally tried the PSS9 but I feel that the build quality and the dampning ability is much greater on the Bilstein. Adjusting the compression or rebound knob on a japanese coilover such as Megan Racing with 32 different "clicks" is just like a blind man trying to adjust the focus of the camera. If you put it on a shock dyno and have both dampers set at "full stiff" you might have completely different results. When you put a Bilstein on a shock dyno, you receive good results which are very linear.
The Stance GR+ were good, but not great, to be competitive at a national level I wanted something that was proven to win, so I bought the Moton's. But at a local level, and for track days if your not trying to win a championship, they will be just fine, But if you are a competitive driver and you like to play with the setup, the Bilsteins will give you that feedback after making some adjustments. Stance won't. I never adjusted the Stance GR+ when I had them because I couldn't feel a difference in the adjustments. |
BC coilovers are Megans with different paint my friend.
Same stuff minus all the false advertising. |
i have bilstein HD shocks revalved by fatcat and 400/280lb springs, i think it would be comparable with the pss9 paired with stiffer springs but without the adjustability, the car handles very well on my setup with less understeer, and rides pretty smooth on city streets due to the superior damping. I've sat in a car with tein flex and monoflex and previously had the car on s-tech/koni's and feel the car as it is now has a superior ride and handles way better.
i feel while the pillow ball mounts could be a good upgrade, the 8 doesn't necessarily need it to perform, shock valving quality and correct spring rates are much more important. A lot of cheaper coilover companies like to throw on features to bedazzle buyers but alot of them lack the quality in shock valving that truly help performance. |

Same stuff minus all the false advertising. -PSS9s are very interesting, but still the fact they use de stock upper mount is kind of a bumer, wouldn't a metal mount with a pillow ball be better? -KW V3 seems a bit overkill, but still pretty much the best option. -What about Greddy Type-S ? |
Greddy is just as bad as the Megans...

^Don't listen to this guy, because Bilstein is under 1.5K :)
