17 inch wheels?

hi i was just wondering if anyone here was running 17 inch wheels? if so, what size, offset, etc?

beside from the visual look, would there be any concern about this?

im currently looking at:

Super Advan Racing SA3R

Fronts - 17 x 8 inch 35mm offset

Rears - 17 x 9 inch 38mm offset

also, what size tires would be good?

i understand that 55s would give the same overall diameter as the stock rx8 wheels plus tires. but that just seems rediculously large for a sidewall.

any feedback would be much appreciated. thanks much.

any reason why go smaller? if your going for looks then most people get larger rims to fill out the wheel well with metal and not rubber.

Yeah BigO is running 17's I think on the track. You might want to ask him.

there just happens to be a very good deal for this set. does anyone know if the offset will be ok? thanks.

I wouldn't use 17" for street use. It will look kind of funny with the wheel gap and everything. 17's are the best for the track.

17" are the best for the track, because they are lighter, smaller diameter so faster in acceleration and better handling because the car is a little bit lowered...am I right?

I am interested to know what size and offset is suitable for our cars as well!!

I have 17" rims for my Blizzack LM-22s for winter. Kazera KZ-V. The tires have the same outer diameter so the wheel well looks just as full. After a few weeks I was completely used to the rubber/metal proportion. I might even like that look slightly better than the stock wheels.

This thread has a lot of 17" rim on RX-8 pictures:

well, any ideas if that offset would be ok? i really want those SA3Rs!!! my most favorite wheel, but i dont have 3000 plus to dish out for the Gen IIs.

i run 17x9 ET40 5zigen fn-01r's w/ 255/40-17 yokohama advan neova's for street and autox. some piccies. yes, there's some wheel gap. yes, the car wasn't clean at the time. ;-)

[edit ET40 not 45. oops.]

there are several threads on 17" wheels. Do a search, I remember seeing atleast one that mentioned different offsets. I run 17s on my car daily. You can see pictures on my car domain page link in my sig.

get 17s if its for the track
dont go staggered if its for the track
Advans are VERY EXPENSIVE if you are just using it on the track, you can get better performing rims for a lot less.

Oldragger has 17's

thanks for the responses, can someone point me in the direction of some words to search on? or threads offering offsets?

BigOLundh 06-13-2006 11:22 PM

you dont need threads for offset. Go to tirerack.com and read there write up on what offset means. This will explain to you and teach how to pick the right offset.

Your wheels are 18X8 +50 right now. A higher offset will bring the Rim inside to the car. A lower offset will push it out the fender. From there you should be able to figure out what offsets will work for you.

yea i read that, still unsure of the 35 front and 38 rear im looking at.

BigOLundh 06-14-2006 12:33 AM

well, your looking at 15 (50-35) and 12 (50-38) mm closer to the fender + the size difference in the rim.

Go look how far in your stock rims are now in comparison to your fender. You have a lot of room to work with... so you should be ok.

StealthFox 06-14-2006 01:47 AM

yep, rx8 has a good amount of room to play with, always consider rolling as well, will give you lots of room

~Rev Free~ 06-14-2006 01:48 AM
