Won't rev past 6500 rpm

Hi,

As the title states my engine just hits a wall at 6500ish rpm. The power is good till than, almost feels like the ECU is kicking me down as its really abrupt.

It was after about an hour of city driving so maybe an overheat?

Had the plugs replaced 3 months ago when they went out on me. Dealership said CAT and Coils where fine though. The BHR ignition kit arrived at my door a couple days ago., so if it is coils I'm covered.

I redlined earlier in the same drive so I think me SSV is working. No CEL. Going to investigate further now. Any ideas are welcome.

Any dash lights?

A misfire will kick the shit out of your top end performance.....

APV opens at 6250 rpm
Maybe its failed

No CELs. I don't think it is a misfire... it is felt like it wanted to rev, just hit a wall... i felt quite a jolt from it. I've felt the misfire before, this was different. It wasn't so much a sputter feeling like the misfire. I am noticing a little bit more backfires recently, or maybe its in my head.

WCS - I turned the key to the ON position and back off a couple times... the APV sounded like they were opening and shutting properly. I try to redline my engine every 2-3 days.

I took the car out 30 minutes later and was able to redline in 1st and get above 6250 in 2nd (ran out of road). It felt like it had decent power, but I will try again tomorrow to confirm.

So I am not sure, maybe a heat issue? Though it wasn't too hot today. And after it happened the first time I checked the coolant temperature on my AP and it was only 183F.

I will check the plugs when I install the BHR kit next week.

Anything more I can check on my AP? I couldn't find a CAT temp option. Will the MM tune stop any CELs I would like to see?

Drop in the BHR coil kit and make sure the plugs are good first. Then see what's happening after that.

Chasing to many changes at once, you'll never know what effect one had versus another, even if you get lucky and stumble across a fix to the issue.

My 2c - It's the CAT. Ask your dealer how they *KNOW* the CAT is OK when they 'checked'. My quess is they'll say there were no codes. Brilliant! But did they look to see if it was clogged? Dubious.

FWIW - mine clogged with no CEL, I couldn't go over 65MPG even in third..... like I hit a wall.

CAT was clogged as shown with a VISUAL inspection. New CAT. No problems.

^^^^^ Yeah good one, mostly easy to check yourself as well.

Try and find someone over there that will lend you a midpipe and put it on ... see what happens.
There are tonnes of Rx8's on the west coast

I haven't experienced the problem since, I think it randomly went into limp mode due to the hour of stop and go traffic I was in.

Was pulling good before, put in BHR coils and its pulling better. My old coils where all spotted and one was straight up cracked across.

I will get mazda to do a visual inspection of the CAT next week when I have an oil change.

Thanks all for your help, and I realize the update is a bit late.
