whacko idle during warm-up

The strangest thing- I have a 2004 with 48,000 miles on it, and I can't think of anything that would cause the car to idle this way:

after driving for a bit, the idle revs up continuously over and over and over again from idle rpm to about 1,500 rpm until i gas it. this happens more often when it is cold. You can see how this is very annoying :banghead:

The sparks are almost brand new.
Got a brand new red top optima battery, and used a CTEK charger on it.
Oil levels are fine.
Haven't checked the MAF yet, but I don't think that would cause the problem, since i cleaned it about 10,000 miles ago.

On an unrelated note, my hazard lights button is stuck. any way to fix it?

Do you have any CELs?
Even though you cleaned the MAF 10K miles ago, its still a good thing to rule out.
Could also be an O2 sensor.
But the RPMs traveling from idle to 1500rpm leans me to believe that the neutral switch is bad.
Can't rule out compression, but I wouldn't suspect that yet.

The button just pops out.
Take a small flathead screwdriver (like from a precision tool kit) and carefully pry it out.
Then take a q-tip with some isopropyl alcohol and clean the button and the cavity it rests in.
Hopefully its not the switch itself because that'll require removing the HU.

does it look like this?

that's what my car did to me about 2 years ago or so. I assume it was the neutral switch because after my transmission was replaced a month later (for a seperate issue), it no longer revved like that.

if it is a manual.. you have a bad neutral pos sensor..

cheap fix. ~ 60 bucks from onlinemazdaparts.com.

yep, it looks exactly like that- also, I did get a p2070 briefly a while ago, but after a couple of redlines it went away completely, and has not come back.
