Weird windshield fogging problem
 

Hi

I am pretty new to RX-8, but I've noticed a weird problem;

When I am driving in wet or humid weather, my windshield (and the other windows) can more or less suddenly start to fog up if I am not running the AC.

I can actually SMELL the humid air coming into the cabin and then I see the fog building up on my windows, the only fix so far, has been to run the AC with defroster for a couple of minutes, but if I turn it off, the humidity start building again.

Mind me for asking, but is this "by design" on this car? Does anyone here know where I can find/check the intake and outlet for the airflow on the car, to be sure that everything is as is should be?

That is;
- To be able to check the air intake
- To be able to check that the air -outlet(s)- arent blocked or anything.

It is kind of annoying to have to drive with the AC on when the temperature ouside isn't even very hot (it increase the gas consumtion and this car already guzzles gas pretty good).

Any information on this would be much apperciated. =)

(I did do a search, but couldn't really find an answer to this particular issue)

In: all the vents in front of you. But if you have set 'recirculate' there's no new air...hence fog inside as you breath. Check the air filter behind the glove compartment that filters the air whether fresh or not you want it clean.

Out: in the trunk, on the sides, behind the carpet just below the wrap around tail lights. Crawl under car and look. maybe you have blocked it.

I have the air flow on "outside air", not "recirculate", thats why I am so puzzled that the fog builds up so easily and quick.

I'll have a look with a flash light and see if anything is blocked, because the car behaves as if in "recirculate air" mode, even though it is not. =)

Weird? This happens in any car in extremely damp or humid conditions. It was happening in my Grand Cherokee just yesterday.

Well, yes, I find this a bit weird, because I've been driving a Mazda MX-3 around for 5 years now and it doesn't have AC, never fogged up, unless I had the air on recirculate (usually while driving in long tunnels).
I drove that car summer and winter, both in humid and dry and warm and cold weather, it just never fogged. :)

I recently had same, so I cleaned my Aldehyde Cabin Air Filter (the filter is in play both outdoor air and recirc). AOK since.

See the CAF DIY for ease of removal/replacement.

I've had this happen (not in my 8) before in other cars.
It always ended up being a coolant leak around the heater core.
ie) bad hose, bad heater core, loose hose clamp
