Water in tail Light . How many?

It happened , water in my tail light. Wouldn't you know it. I just ran out of warranty. After reading several threads on this common issue, it got me wandering just how many folks have had this problem. I bought the new an improved sealing gasket from Madza today . 44 damn dollars. What a rip. It is just a cheap grey foam gasket .

Search is your friend

Sorry but I think ALL Rx-8 users got this problem. Even with the new updated gasket.

i have found that there are many small problems like this on the RX-8. will the dealer replace it all? i got my car used, my car is 04 with 36k miles.

and can i ask where is the water come from?

Mazurfer 01-09-2008 09:41 PM

I don't know...knock on wood, but I've had my car a little over two years now and I live in Central Florida and it rains(tropical rainforest downpour type) here what seems like +300 days a year.............with no issues so far.

I have water in my left taillight. The car is getting old, purchased on 10/2003. I'm going to try and use silicone to plug the leak. Any info on how to remove the taillights?

if u're still in warranty, yes.

other than that, no.

Yes it is a common problem and it is easy to fix. Its unfortunately design fault. If you take the tail light out and look at the back of it where the stop light bulb goes in there is a flat piece of plastic below that area which you need to drill a 8mm hole in so that the water does not collect there and then run through in the bulb hole. I will take a pic and post it later so you guys can see exactly where. Never had a problem since I have done it to my two Rx8's.

Pic to show drain holes

These drain holes should prevent water from getting into the tail lights.

I think it's all about when you get this issue, not if you get it.

There are lots of ideas how to fix it

I've had the same problem on a few of my past vehicles and hole drilling seems to work the best for me also.

swiftnet 01-13-2008 03:16 PM

Thanks AndyRx8's - I'll be drilling those holes tomorrow.

i just came back from the dealer, and replacing the taillight is going to cost 250 dollar and replace the sunvisor that is also known to be broken cost 150 dollar. i just think its stupid so i left. my car is out of warranty so they will not cover it? isnt it a recall on it? well i guess ill buy it off online some where.

heyarnold69 01-16-2008 12:30 PM

I just found out I am having the same problem with my tail lights. I called my dealership to find out that my warranty just ran out last month. Why does it always happen that way?
Anyhow, the service advisor said to talk to the service manager and that he may be able to help me out. Sure enough, I came in and they ordered my new tail light and will install it free of charge. I was pretty shocked to see them want to help me out. I just hope this one will hold up. If not, it looks like I'll have to drill some drain holes myself.

I had one changed over a year and a half ago and no problems since. My other, oem, has not had a problem at all. 2005 March build.

OJsRX8 02-12-2008 01:50 PM

yea i just went to the delear and they swaped it someone told me it was just condensation. but idk but no problems since.

sosonic 02-17-2008 11:17 PM

Had the problem when I bought the car. I'm a 2nd owner. It was ridiculous, after I took to a car wash it was like 1/4 full. The car was still under warranty from the dealer, so had them fix it. Have not had a problem since.

Seems to be a "when" problem that many have. Drilling holes seems good, but I wonder about humidity still possibly causing some issues.

chancejat 02-17-2008 11:28 PM

been there done that....dealer fixed with new tails and gaskets....
