Quick question, should i sell my old cat and buy an AP midpipe, or should i just gut my old cat?

tza0001 01-11-2013 05:55 PM

Depends on what you are aiming to accomplish...Buying a midpipe with larger diameter than the stock one will help a tiny bit more on power (don't imagine anything too significant). Further, there will be a difference in sound. Best thing you can do is find youtube videos and try to figure out which sound you like the most.

DR04RX8 01-11-2013 06:33 PM

I've been on YouTube, and I've looked at some AP sounds and it's a bit loud, compared to a gutted cat. And i don't want anything too expensive. And with the gutted cat, will i shoot flames with a stock exhaust? And also what about the midpipe with stock exhaust?

tza0001 01-12-2013 08:32 AM

Yes you will shoot flames with a gutted cut. Dude I seriously have no clue how a stock exhaust with a gutted cat will sound. Definitely louder...I guess if your old cat is fried you can try it and see if you like it or not. Depending the midpipe sound changes. Straight pipe with no resonators no cat super loud; pipe with resonator no cat less loud, pipe with high flow cat and resonator a bit louder than stock, pipe with high flow cat and no resonator quite loud not as much as a straight pipe. With all these options you will shoot flames :) :)

I currently have a RP Supercat and an HKS single outlet exhaust with an AEM intake and I love it. It is loud but I like it..When buying exhausts and midpipes you are all alone..It is your car, your money, and your decision....

DR04RX8 01-12-2013 12:48 PM

True on that. I wad planning on buying the AP with single resonator I think. Or two. Here's the site for the midpipe that i kinda want to get.

Well they are vendor here so they are legit

DR04RX8 01-13-2013 09:08 AM

How much was your supercat? And what do you mean single outlet? The exhaust that goes to the middle of the car? Through the rotary symbol in the back?

tza0001 01-13-2013 09:28 AM

My supercat was about $400 and single outlet has only one exhaust tip. No point to have two tips (besides looks) on a single exhaust header car. Plus the hks single outlet is lighter than any two tip exhaust, the pipe is straight..er.., and the sound IMO is the best out there. I was debating between hks single outlet or exoticspeed. HKS won and I have never regret it. Look some info on the forum about hks single outlet exhaust and other options. As far as my rp supercat I like it (although definitely the car is superloud and I am always careful for cups). Further, I do not expect for the supercat to last for too long. If I could get 20k miles out of it I would be thrilled:) If I had a bit more money I would go HANDS DOWN for the bhr midipe with the high flow cat they put on. THe bhr midpipe is the best pipe for the rx8. A bit pricey though....

DR04RX8 01-13-2013 06:09 PM

On BHR it sells for like 446 i think. You would recommend saving for the BHR?

tza0001 01-13-2013 08:22 PM

Bhr is I think 400 without a oxygen sensor bang and a high flow cat. If you want these it goes to 600. Dude BHR is among the best options out there if not the best. I would say...yes save for a bhr midpipe and you will not regret it. I wish I could have waited a bit more and had gotten a bhr mid pipe with a high flow cat. My current set up is louououououdddddd:) I do not mind it though. I just hope cups or neighbors don't get pissed with my car:)

DR04RX8 01-13-2013 10:26 PM

Lol yea cops can be ass wipes with imports..and on the bhr would i need one o2 bung, or two since it gives the options.

tza0001 01-14-2013 10:32 AM

I believe you only need one for the secondary oxygen sensor. Talk to BHR and they should confirm. There is also on the forum a thread for the bhr mid pipe if you want to take a look.

Nothing to do with the midpipe. But it's time for my oil change, i use synthetic blend, and i just noticed like a yellow/white goo on top of my dipstick. The guy at AutoZone said i might be getting water inside..it's been raining really bad for the past week. Do i just do the oil change? He suggested flushing the engine, but idk how to do it.

tza0001 01-14-2013 12:07 PM

Do not listen to the autozone guy:) This is normal for rx8s. All of them get a milky foam on the dipstick or inside the oil filler neck. It is due to condensation. Just do a regular oil change as you always do. You might want to do some reading on synthetic oil v. conventional. There is lots of discussion on this matter in this forum with no final winner:) However, it should help you gain some insight on whether synthetic is better than conventional...No one will give you an answer on what oil yo use so do not ask:) :)

DR04RX8 01-14-2013 01:23 PM

Lol once again, thank you for solving this mystery bro! I'm trying my best to keep up with this rotary lol. I learn new things every second with this car.

DR04RX8 01-14-2013 08:40 PM

Also, i heard that there's a new starter? That the 04-05 are bad. There's a new version that's better? Abs also i have an oil leak. It's always dipping at the starter. Abs i think i saw a wet spit by where the oil filter goes. Would there be another place where it could leak? I tried looking for it but i can't find anything. My whole under carriage (between the starter and the transmission) is like drenched with oil, old oil that is.

tza0001 01-15-2013 11:33 AM

The starter for 04-05 models was weak. There is an upgraded one which spins faster. Here is some info: https://www.rx8club.com/tech-garage-...recall-196072/

They are a bit expensive but you can find a used one from a post 2006 totaled for a lot cheaper. The junkyard would be a good place to look.

As far as the oil leak, I guess make sure the filter is put on correctly. People also have issues with the oil pan. Best way to find the source is to try to clean the dirty area really good and check again after you drive.

DR04RX8 01-15-2013 12:16 PM

I was going to take off the pan and clean it yesterday. But it was cold and i got lazy :P and where the oil was it was at the bottom of the tube leading to the filter. But i don't have problems on losing oil besides the regular oil consumption. But i will clean it next time before i do my oil change and see where it could be lacking from. Thanks again! :D

DR04RX8 01-15-2013 12:46 PM

Lol i got lost on all the N3H1 numbers and everything :P
