Turbo install - massive oil leak on oil sandwich plate
Installed the turbo. No leaks on the turbo itself, but I can't tell where this leak is exactly coming from. It feels like it's coming from the bottom of the sandwich plate, but i'm not 100% sure. It doesn't really look like it's coming from the feed line, at least definitely not where it joins the plate and the compression fitting.
I'm getting pretty frustrated. And this stupid bolt that holds the plate in is exactly NOT 1". It's like 1.01 or something, because my 1" sockets are starting to round it out. And it doesn't fit on them. |
The o-rings on the adapter plate need to be oiled prior to installation to prevent leaks and the hardware is probably metric-sized.

Though on a side note, when the leak was only a few drops but still enough not to drive it around, it sounded AWESOME. :D So at the moment the only thing getting me through this is that i'll be done as soon as I fix it.. Any guess on what size the nut is in the plate? 1" is just barely too small.. |
I seem to remember using a 23 or 24 mm socket but I don't recall off hand. Also make sure you are using the correct oil filter as I know the GReddy oil filter relocation kit (for example) actually uses a Toyota oil filter for exact fitment. There is an ever-so-slight difference in thread sizes between the Toyota and Mazda filters.

A well-installed and tuned turbo equipped RX-8 needs no more gauges than does a factory turbo-equipped car does.

I didn't fit the oil restrict fitting..and the compression fitting seems to have a little play in it (I can slide it up and down). I totally forgot about this little bastard..it was sitting on the shelf and I just forgot to put it in. So much else to think about, and a little 0.05" restrictor could do it. Would this cause this leak? Please say yes. |
same thing happened to me with the oil sandwich plate, put the filter first on the oil sandwich and then put it in.

grab the oil adapter in your hand, screw the filter on the adapter then proceed to install it on the engine

Ah, I could've done that..But it seems like the filter adapter would unscrew come time to change the oil filter.
I figured out what it was, as I caught a glimpse of the beast behind the UIM. I had the compression fittings that connected eachother pretty damn tight, But there was just a little play on the line that feeds into the hose. Turns out thats bad; So I tightened it down like the mother lord holy jesus, and she works like a charm, doesn't leak a drop! Everything else on the turbo install went without a hitch. Thanks guys :) This is the first time i've installed a turbo in a non-turbocharged car. |
