Transmission NOISE + difficult 2nd GEAR

Just wanted to report this problem in a new thread instead of resurrecting some old ones

I have a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I have heard it grinding on one or two ocassions but it is difficult to shift into 2nd most of the time. This happens mostly in low RPMs below 4K.

I also hear this annoying noise in low rpms, lemme try to describe it:

1st gear - 5K rpm - time to shift into 2nd - but you have to slow down instead - so you press the clutch while the car is still in 1st gear (is this called coasting??) --- thats the time when I hear this annoying noise --- car still going maybe 15-20 mph - the moment I shift into nuetral and release the clutch - the noise is gone.

This noisy and 'difficult to get into 2nd' transmission is very frustating. Some solutions I have read on a few threads are:
- Replace clutch
- Royal Purple synthetic in your trans and diff

Has anyone got this figured out yet?

Thanks.

How many miles do your cars have on them? I have seen a lot of tranny problems in here. I can't imagine how trannies are going out so quick. I am dreadful of what is going to happen in 2 or 3 years...

my 1-2 shift problems were cured when i realized i was a dumbass ans pulling down and slightly to the left when going from 1st to 2nd... it usually would either hang up or grind or do both - something about the linkage just didn't like it.

Ever since I realized that, i haven't had a problem.

I am bringing this thread back to life because I am having the same problem and the dealer cannot hear it (of course). The same noisy difficult 2nd gear and sometimes 1st and 3rd. I now have 1100 miles on the car and have had this since new. The noise gets worse when the transmission is warm and I am in stop and go traffic.

Has anyone actually resolved this issue either by changing fluid or having a dealer identify the cause and fixing it.

Thanks,

Can only speak for myself here...

Never really cared for the feel of 1-2 but I lived with it. Also had the noisy input shaft in neutral with clutch released.

At 9500 miles I changed to Redline for trans and diff. For the first mile of the day, the 1-2 feels the same, maybe even a little worse, but after that it is like glass. The lack of resistance going into second after the trans is warmed up feels just great.

As far as the input shaft noise, sitting in a garage with the window open, I actually have to press and release the clutch to hear the difference. It's still there, but barely noticeable.

Your mileage may differ.

I had my car in for service and they changed the gear oils and now the 2nd gear grinds when shifting into it or down shifting. I took it back to the dealer as soon as possible. A Mazda Rep came out I guess and took it on a test drive and now they are Saying the problem is due to wear and tear and Mazda will not cover it. The dealer wanted $1500 to tear it down and any additional labor will cost more. I told them to get f**ked. I called Mazda corp and they told me that the Reps say is the final say and they can't do anything about it. I don't drive aggressively in my car, I don't race much and this happens and now they are saying that I'm responsible WTF type of Warranty does Mazda have a selective bumper to bumper.

to the best of my knowledge that noise that you are hearing in first gear is the throwout bearing. My car has done it since day one so i do not think it is a prob. I now have 15K miles
