IL Thermostat

Hi
Just installed some Prosport gauges and have a question about the thermostat . Installed the water temp sensor in the upper radiator hose and the temp gauge doesn't register until after the engine runs for about 3 to 5 minutes. I was under the impression that the thermostat when cold should still allow some coolant to flow. The needle doesn't move until the thermostat opens fully , but when it does work the gauge matches the obd perfectly. So do I have a defective thermostat or is this normal?
Thanks

If you want a faster response, install the sensor in the heater line. Racing Beat has an adapter for that.

Thanks for the reply's, I first had the sensor in the heater line and the gauge would read 15 to 20 degrees cooler then the obd. I guess I'll just have to learn to live with it, plus it will still give warning about overheating. Had a thought, anyone placed the sender at the bolt to drain the block?
