Still can't get car to start-Ignition coils.

Okay, I'll walk through everything that has happened in this saga.

About 2 weeks ago, maybe a little more, my car was backfiring, rough idol blah blah blah. So ignition system is the problem.

Did this on and off a little, then I bought spark plugs. NGK iridium.

Installed plugs. Car ran okay, but could tell wires and coils are needed. But, not backfiring or anything. End of work one day, I start the car and go to drive. I feel loss of power and CEL flash, okay backfire, I know I need wires and coils still. But, didn't have money for all 3. So I bought the wires and installed them. No change. I was still at work, so I just drove home. Ordered coils.

Ignition Coils 4pc Set Kit for 04 08 Mazda RX 8 | eBay

Ran the car once down the road to the store and back, while waiting for coils, ran like ass. Stayed away from driving it, but it would struggle but still start. I put the coils in. During this, I unplugged my battery, pushed up the air filter box, took off accordian tube, and the black box, took the harnesses of the coils, off the air box as well. Then I tried to start it and it just turns over with no kick. Kinda like if the fuel pump wasn't going, but I know its related to the coils somewhere, thats just how I'd explain it, turn turn turn but no kick. Did ALL of this again, and in the process tightening stuff to make sure it was okay broke a bracket that the 3rd coil goes on(Leading-2), zip-tied this and put everything back after checking all wires and cable and everything, btw both times I turned it to on I let it sit a little bit as well as turning the wheel and everything for the power steering reset. Still no start...please help.

Edit: NGK spark plug wires.

Anyone? Need a little insight.

Fake Ebay coils (recent thread on fake Ebay coils) for one and you need to properly diagnose things rather than guess. Also I think you mean misfire, not backfire.

JaysRX8FL 07-23-2013 05:58 PM

Yes I meant misfire lol. And Common sense told me, plugs and coils, then the "Rx8 specialist" At mazdas suggested Plugs, wires and coils. I'm not ruling out that the coils are bad. But there was absolutely no bad feedback on these coils. I went through and look at each negative and neutral posts individually, none were on these coils. The plug in is, silver and a little slimmer at the bottom then the OEM's I believe OEMs are copper? or gold color. Coils could be bad, not ruling that out, but is there anything else I should check before I'd know for sure?

Ok, guessing here, your converter could be completely blocked from your misfiring problem, try unbolting the cat and inspecting it. You may want to try starting it, but it will be call the cops loud.
I would try that first.
Maybe it's flooded? Another symptom of bad ignition.

You can start up with old coil, but not the new coil....let me guess what's wrong.....the new coil?
Also, the bracket is what ground the coils, i could be wrong, just my 2 cents.

Thats what I was thinking as well. I just don't want to ship them back and get a different kind and be back where I am.

Also, I turn the key to on, let it sit a minute, and I have a solid CEL. Which is normal for mine-I have a p2402 I believe, evaporative emisions pump.
But after about 5 seconds. It blinks for about 10 seconds and goes back to solid.
Could this be "Limp" Mode?

ShinkaEvo 07-23-2013 06:48 PM

blinking CEl means misfire, that's it.
Just don't drive the 8 until you get the new bracket and proper coils.
From any auto store would just work fine, they are not best, but they work.

MAF hooked back up, MAF in right way?

Battery disconnect should have reset ECU, but what the heck, try 20 brake stomp reset.

Hold gas to the floor while cranking in case flooded.

Best I got. Sorry.

PM Swoop, if he is still around. He is close to lakeland. I am in Oviedo.

JaysRX8FL 07-23-2013 07:09 PM

Alright thanks. I already tried the unflood technique, try to jump it I'll try the 20 stomp. Anything special or just ignition-on, 20 pumps, engine-off then try cranking?

Your problem is you are guessing, and then you are asking us to guess for you and so people are pulling recommendations out of their asses. There is a factory service manual and test procedures for a reason. Search for it and use it. Or just take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

As for the fake coils, well they are advertised as Mazda coils and they are not Mazda coils, and are know to be physically different and cause issues, Ebay reviews aside.

Until you know the coils are installed and functioning properly you are just wasting your time dicking with anything else.

Fair enough.
