Steering Shaft Torque Sensor Issue
Anyone have any knowledge about Steering Shaft Torque Sensor malfunctions that shut down power assisted steering?
|
sure
|
TORQUE SENSOR INSPECTION
1. Measure the resistance between torque sensor connector terminals A and B, and B and C. * If there is any malfunction, replace the steering gear and linkage. * Standard A—B: 12—15 ohms * B—C: 12—15 ohms |
for instance. what is your trouble?

Seems that my sensor has begun to fail, and the cost to repair is ~ $1900. I just spent $ 2,700 on repairs to one of the oil coolers and lines 2 weeks ago. This car is costing me a mint.
In any event in the interim I just reset the DSC by disconnecting the battery and the power steering then works fine until the next time the sensor malfunctions. I was curious if anyone new of any work arounds such as disabling the sensor. |
you coul ddisable the sensor by piulling its plug. then of coure you would have no steering.
why do they think its the sensor and are you out of warranty? |
6K over Warranty.
No reason given. My guess is that it's the usual "replace enough stuff" and it should work. I will do the check however. Where are the terminals located? |
HELP! HELP! HELP! My Power Sterring just "died" on me..... the meter shown a yellow sterring icon .... & i lost my power sterring control......... What goes wrong?
And anyone can tell me where is the Power Sterring Fuse located as well as the Torque Sensor located? Many Thanks in advance.............. |
Not....
The torque sensor is actually inside the steering motor, not replaceable seperately.
The good news is that it is NOT usually the sensor, it's the wiring to it. Early models (2003/2004) have a fault in the harness that runs from the top of the rad to the steering. There is no recall, it is considered too rare to worry about, but the Mazda tech line will/should know about it. I had to tell the mechanic what to ask.... Mine now works fine. Good luck. S |
Thanks a lot to StealthTL............ Please tell me what should I do now? Thanks
|
Many thanks! I had a feeling it was the wiring as the fail is random in nature and only occurs during turning on the ignition.

I am currently fighting with this issue. They’ve replaced the steering rack and the EPS module. It drove fine for a week. I started the car to come home and the power steering light is on. I’m curious what this harness is that is mentioned in this thread. Does anyone have any part numbers by chance? Dealer can’t get it in for 2 weeks. Thanks for any help.

I would check the 3 wire connector under the airbox on top of the radiator ( should be green/ red, green yellow, and green /red ) beside a big 2 wire connector for the EPS motor.make sure the pins in the connector are not able to wiggle around causing an intermittent connectivity issue.
