Anyway, my RX8 is doing this noise when starting (cold or not):

Anyone has idea what this might be? I read a couple of posts in this thread and didn't find anything similar. The car always starts and works well after, however I don't think this is normal...

Thank you all!
It's hard to tell from a video, but it could be bearings going bad.
Try to use a piece of tubing to your ear or a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint it.

Starts but won't hold idle

Hey thanks for the info. I haven't tried a compression test simply because I'm worried to drive my car out the driveway in its condition.
I can't figure out why it won't hold idle. Starts great, but dies if I don't hold the gas down. Opinions??

2004 RX-8
Brand new: Air Filter, Coils, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Starter, Battery, Oil, Coolant, and Fuel.
I cleaned the MAF Sensor
My fuel pump/filter is 3 years old.

Put a code reader on and see if any codes come up.

Bad Purchase

I took your advice and bought the little OBD II Mini. Those guys sent me a mini-disk to get the instructions (yeah, like GameCube)... Neither of my computers take them. Tried to simply use bluetooth but never recognized it. So I'll get back to you when I can get a good read, but I know for certain the O2 sensor was showing up before I parked it a couple months ago.

After OBDII

I pulled a code P2259 " Secondary Air Injection System control 'B' Circuit Low, O2S, CAT, and EVA.
As far as the P2259 I cleaned the connector to the solenoid valve, but ended up replacing it.
Still not holding idle.
I'm really beginning to believe it has to do with the feedback around my cat. I've noticed some dents on the cat from when I bought the car (it was super low to the ground).
Can I use universal O2 sensors or OEM? It's like a couple hundred for OEM, but I see universals for pretty cheap. Anyone else thinking a cat delete to a res and a couple new o2 sensors will do the trick? (I don't have emissions here)

2006 rx8 gt no start

instead of creating another no start thread id rather see if i can get some support from this one. I have an '06 GT and its not starting but im kind of stumped as to why. About a month and a half ago i had a random misfire while driving for a few seconds then it went away, i scanned the code and it was random misfire i forget the exact code #. I didnt drive the car for about 2 weeks after that and the next time i did i started it up, moved it from the garage into my driveway and left it running while i was working on my dads fc, (checking on my 8 every 3 min or so untill it reached average operating temperature) and once it was ready i shut it down. A couple hours later i was finished with the rx7, fired up the 8 no problem and let it warm up at idle then moved it into the garage and shut it off. Now, fast forward another 2 weeks and all of a sudden it wont start. So far i have done the following:

-pulled all spark plugs and fuel pump fuse/relay, cranked and reinstalled...still no start

-changed the oil

-pulled plugs and cranked again....still no start

-inspected ignition coils for signs of arcing/damage and found none (coils are 1 year old approx 4k km on them)

-preformed an inline spark test and confirmed spark being delivered at ALL plugs

-Checked fuel pump voltage and confirmed 11.0V at wiring harness

-pulled plugs AGAIN, this time cranked for approx 10-25 seconds and repeated 7 times over the course of 2 days as well as cleaned the spark plugs

-reinstalled them again and still no start!!

the car is definitely receiving fuel and spark, it cranks at about 250 rpm and i can hear the spark going off as well as see and smell fumes coming out of the tailpipes. cat was replaced in april (not oem or highflow) and plugs are 2 years old with about 8k km on them. I have a video of its startup attempt below.

Thanks everyone!

Hi, i have and 04 rx8 hi power japan...

His am new, i have and 04 rx8 hi power japan import, wheel on the right side. Car is in Finland. I had an fault code of ignition and changed coils, plugs and wires. First i put those wires on wrong order, don't know how i managed to do that. it worked after that and i noticed it soon and put them onright order. after that i did i high rev session with car on stop and fault code did remove away. i stopped car and after night car did not start. i noticed dead battery and changed that but car won't turn, no cranck nothing. just lights etc on metering lights also work. no fault codes coming. just i whining noise from accelerating part. and click when i start to ignite car JA: Did you test the battery with a voltmeter? And have you ever changed one before? Customer: yes battery is fine i checked it also with and sales firm again and they double checked its and brand new battery JA: Are you fixing your RX-8 yourself? What have you tried so far? Customer: yes i am fixing myself JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you? Customer: the switchblade key is not okay i tired to change battery so its not connecting with battery because i lost one part, but dealer said it should not be a thing with starting car, only with remote locking and alarm and trunk so everything seems right but it just not turn over does not try to start eve though lights are on and no immmobilizer sign when i turn on the key no red key light

I ordered new starter, had an answer for us that it should be that. it that the first thing you think in my case? Starter?

This rx8 is going to get built a true sq hifi competion car, if wNT TO follow you find the project in FB at Muhku-Tuning!

Joakim - when you turn the key and try to crank, do the lights all go out? Or just no change and no crank?
Very unlikely to be the starter....

Did you try boosting it with another car or a booster pack? Sometimes brand new batteries are duds because they sat on a shelf for who know how long without a recharge. Also do you have a voltmeter/multimeter so you can measure the battery voltage?

Be sure your terminals are clean and tight.
Even if you can't tighten the bolts any further, the terminals ends can stretch.
I used post cap shims on mine.
Also check to see if all of your grounds are not loose or corroded.

Perhaps the key needs to be programmed to the car. Does the dash light in the shape of a car with a key inside flash when or light steady when you attempt to start? If you have another key that works, you can program additional ones yourself, but if none of them work, you need Mazda.

The battery inside the key is for the remote door/trunk opening functions, doesn't affect the immobilizer chip in the key.

Hot stalling (and hot starting) problems are a common sign of low compression. The only way to know for certain is to get a rotary-specific compression test done. Mazda dealers can do it, as can anybody who has purchased one of the few 3rd party testers out there.

It's really unlikely that it's directly related to a P2259 issue but it could (theoretically) be vacuum related.

If you want diagnose this yourself, you're going to need basic tools starting with a $20 ELM327 bluetooth OBD-II adapter and a smartphone app. Using that, check your long-term fuel trim (between -8% and +8% is NBD) and MAF rate (should be ~5 g/s at warm idle). LTFT greater than +8% and MAF rate below 5 g/s probably means vacuum leak.

The bigger issue you're going to run into is budget. If you can't afford the 1 labor hour diagnostic fee from a dealer, you're going to be in trouble. These cars don't take neglect well and it sounds like yours was in bad shape to begin with.

^Exactly. Do you have the compression results?

Buying an RX-8 without a compression test is gambling, and one you will very likely lose.

This car may be cheap to buy, but it's not very cheap to keep it running well. There are a lot of stuff you need to take care of, like ignition components and cooling system.

today 1 brought 1 gal of fresh gas to see what if the gas is off.....it started after a whiile. than whiile hot it stalled again.i told my wife about these crazy cars. i said watch i will go start it now cold it will stall after it warms up.
it ran very good and did not stall 39 plus mins till i shut it off..i understand the comp. test ...but what gives on running fine 2 hours after stalling out hot..???

That's why you need to get data as described above. It could be many things, compression is one of them.
