starter probs (new starter, click only, doesn't crank)

Hi All
I'm in the UK and new to the site. I have recently fitted a new starter. I had problems restarting and found that a spark plug had wiped out. So I have fitted 4 new plugs as recommended here in the uk. BUT now all I get is a clicking sound the engine and starter doesn't even crank!

Can anyone give me a clue as to where the problem could lie Please?

battery is dead or not connected properly would be my first thoughts.

welcome:)

I thought this too but I took the battery out and had it tested at my local parts place. They say it is fine?

Has the car started, at the very least cranked, since you put in the new starter? Have you verified the two connections going to the starter are connected? One is held on by a 12mm nut and the other is a simple slip on type connector.

Be careful down there.... it is always hot. I recommend disconnecting your battery's negative terminal before poking around down there.

Pull the starter back out and make sure the gear isn't seized. Usually this issue is battery related but you tested it and they say its fine. Even if it was weak you'd get more than just a click.

You can test this by keeping the started hooked up but uninstalled and turning the ignition...BE WARNED though starters have massive torque and if its not held down tight enough it will fly around. At this point though you need to test the starter because either the solenoid is shot or when you put it in the gears or somethign is keeping it from engaging properly with the flywheel and its getting siezed that way

right folks only just managed to start my car with a tow. It did run but struggles below about 1500 revs and won't tick over. Diagnostics do not suggest and error code so I figure coils are ok. Would it be worth changing HT leads? as it already has new plugs.

Help much appriciated

If it was running fine before the starter change...why would you go looking someplace else ;)

First rule of diagnosis..Keep it Simple :)..if you are working on a system and something stops working..it likely wasn't something new from an unrelated system

Go back to the battery and stater circuit :)

Did you do a battery relocation or have the OEM setup? Check your battery for voltage and make sure its charged. Also make sure your ground is good to go I had the same problem with mine but had a relocation to the trunk done and all I did to fix the problem was add an extra ground to my battery...now works like a champ :)

Thanks guys. Now I've got it running it cranks but fails to start. Whilst running however it struggles under 1500 revs usually just cutting out. That's why I thought wires. Could a battery change sort this on it own?

still struggling

Right new plugs new wires new starter and battery. I have managed to get a tow and start the car this way. It is running fine until I slow down at about 1500 revs it just dies. I can hear a misfire but it seems slight. The car still will not start from cold? HELP anyone:confused:
