SSV Stuck Open. Car Rumbles and Dies. No power.
 

Hello everyone,

I have a IMT stuck open code. I believe my OBD 2 reader reports it as P2070.
This is a stuck SSV if am not mistaken; however, my car RUMBLES, big time, and it dies if I don't apply the throttle. When it does run on it's own, the stabilizes around 500 RPMs. Recently, it overheated very briefly because I was on the freeway and my Alt/Waterpump belt snapped, and I had to drive the car to a suitable place to pull over.

In any case, I think my engine is shot, but there is the possibility my SSV is causing all this nonsense. Have stuck open SSV valves been known to to do this? I thought there was power loss associated with open SSV's, but nothing this bad.

Also, the car has 117k miles on original engine, MT, and after this problem happened, the exhaust shoots out one powerful puff of smoke, instead of a steady flow of exhaust like a normally functioning engine does. It does not seem to be burning coolant. I'm also getting a misfire in Rotor1.

Try using your finger to turn the valve. You should be able to push up on the dashpot arm with relative ease. If it wont turn, then you need to pull it and clean it.

Drain coolant, pull the battery, pull the battery box, air intake, upper intake manifold, and thermostat housing.

Once you pull all that, you can remove the 2 bolts holding the SSV in and pull it out. If it's really stuck, it'll be hard to get out due to the build up. Don't pull on the dashpot arm, and be careful about prying it out. you don't want to damage the machined surface that the gasket sits on (on the block or the valve). Just keep twisting and wiggling.

Scrub the SSV down with a wire brush and brake cleaner clean out the upper intake manifold, and the accordion tube. If the SSV is stuck it's because your motor blew oil into the intake form the filler neck blow back. It's why most of us run a catch can.

Reassemble and top off the coolant.

Thanks. I hope it's just the SSV. I know it's probably gummed up since I premix too, and I or the previous owners have never cleaned it. We shall see. If not, rebuild time. It also sucks I have to drain coolant since I just replaced it after my belt snapped.

Premix would not gum up gum up the SSV, the injectors are after the SSV. But yes, if it's not clean will get stuck and more so if you are running an aftermarket intake or did not change the stock filter often enough.

Thanks man. Good to know. Just get everything off except the coolant draining + removing thermostat housing. I'll see tomorrow and hope it's the SSV instead of a jacked up rotor.
