Squeaking sound. sounds like knocking valves

Been noticing a squeaking noise lately in my car. I tightened all the bolts up b/c i added springs not too long ago and that didn't help. It may be a belt or something along that line. It sounds like valves knocking. I know a rotary doesn't have any but my ranger's knocked real bad and this is the sound it is making. Any suggestions guys?

You have aftermarket swaybars? I was getting a squeak do to dry swaybar bushings.

mmats69 07-21-2005 10:50 PM

that could be it zoom. I do run 87 in the car and just noticed it lately. don't have aftermarket sway bars though. I does do it on rev up but not at idle.

I can't believe anyone runs anything less than Premium gas in their RX-8 ...

did you ever consider that it's preignition or detonation from running insufficient fuel octane exacerbated by high temperature conditions?

I'll run some 93 through there to see what happens. Thanks for the info.

My car makes the same sound, but only when the engine is cold and I'm asking it to move the car. Sounds like birds under the hood or something.. I only run premium fuel, usually 94 octane.

Is it only while cold that your '8 makes the noise?

zoom44 07-22-2005 12:13 PM

cold after starting would be the air pump

Well, I have run 2 tanks of supreme (93 octane) fuel through my car and the sound has actually gotten worse. Only thing I can think of is take it to the mazda dealer and see what they have to say about it.

cold engien squeaky noise under load is the air pump for emissions trying to get teh cat up to temp.

zoom44 07-28-2005 12:25 PM

where are you mmats

josh989 07-28-2005 12:28 PM

when I bought my car, the dealer actually told me they filled it up with premium, then he said after that, nothing but 87. the manual says 91, the dealer says 87, everyone on here seems to have a different opinion and good reasons to back them. i do the octance shuffle everytime i fill up.

mmats69 07-29-2005 01:04 PM

I am in Birmingham, AL. The engine is at operating temp when the noise is heard. But one thing I noticed yesterday was when I was on my way home from work it wasn't that bad. Maybe it has something to do with the heat. Car said 96 on way to work and 76 on way home.

zoom44 07-29-2005 01:21 PM

you know rxeighter? or someone else with scanalyser?

mmats69 07-29-2005 01:26 PM

Can't say that I know any of those folks.

zoom44 07-29-2005 01:50 PM

get in touch with him and see if you have any codes stored.

Went to the dealer today and did a ride-a-long. He said that the "noise" was quote, "something he has never heard before". So that was reassuring about the problem. At least when I take it in Thursday they will give me a rental. He also said they would look at the ecu and make sure it doesn't need an upgrade. So we shall see.............

mmats69 08-05-2005 02:10 PM

Found the problem. It was actually an exhaust mount rubbing against the hanger b/c it was not tight enough. Took care of the problem and only cost $30 to fix for repositioning/lubing the mount and making sure the bolts were tight. So problem solved. If any have this noise be sure to check it out. I have an aftermarket exhaust and it was doing the rubbing just to let you guys/gals know. Brian

This sqeaking/chirping sound is all too familiar. found that when the clutch is engaged the sound goes away. My car is completely stock and I use premium fuel. The air pump suggestion sounded plausible ...disengaging the clutch decrease load. Besides the person with the aftermarket exhaust hanger, has anyone found the problem and fixed it!!! ...and not sure I'd classify this noise as engine noise.

That ought to answer your question. Problem not related to OEM equipment.
