Shocks Top Nut untightening?

What would cause the top nut on the shocks to untighten?? had a Sway bar clunking noise comming from front right, turned out to be the top nut on the shock was almost off... sounds just like when you break your swaybar bracket and the bar hits on the frame, almost same area the noise comes from, tightened up and week later its about a quarter turn off and little clunk noise. Is it smart to throw a drop of locktight on there?? im pretty sure those top bolts you dont wanna over tighten due to it will just snap the bolt? also i had that side of the car repaired on bout year about due to front Tboned. so im thinking if you are supose to put locktight on it they didn't, or the damn shock is blown out only a year later???
Any info much appreachated. thanks in advance

Instead of Locktite, can you put a second nut on top of the old one and tighten them together? That would definitely keep it from backing off by putting the pressure on the nuts and not the shaft. (Yeah, I said it! ;))
