running rough and exhaust glowing
 

I have a 2004 231 RX8. The car takes a while to Start by cranking over periodically and eventually it runs. It runs really rough with a miss fire and slight backfire and wont idle the exhaust post cat and beyond starts to glow red.
The car started and ran fine until one day travelling at about 60MPH and then a sudden loss of power and a bad vibration caused me to stop and have it recovered. I have changed the coils and checked the MAF sensor. Could some one point me in the right direction is it the cat or has the motor blown.

Sounds like someone needs a new motor

that bad eh! could it be as simple as a fryed cat? if i pull the cat out and no improvement in the running of the car would that narrow it down to the engine. Could it be a dead plug? or am i clutching at straws.

I have made threads SPECIFICALLY on misfires and hard starts. There are stickies which give a mass amount of information regarding this.

As for your description, I won't flame (But man I want to). Sounds like you blew your CAT, it's clogged, and most likely that caused the plugs to foul out, blow your ignition coils, and possibly (most likely) result in a loss of compression.

So yes, new motor time. A simple search on hard starts would have easily led you to find out that hot / hard starts are quite commonly connected with a low compression in one or both rotors.

Generally, I will answer questions when I believe I can. It just annoys me how people will ask questions that have been covered thousands of times on here, and it would only take a quick search to figure them out.

I made the threads I did for a reason - So we wouldn't have so many threads like this. And there are stickies which have basically all the information one would need.

I understand people wanting opinions on their 'unique' situations, but "glowing cat" and "misfire"..... honestly? We have so much information regarding both of these that would have answered the question much before it was even needed to be asked. Besides... I thought I took it easy on him compared to what most members do to people who ask questions like this :P I at least put some input in to what most likely happened.



Oh and BTW Carbon8, nice build! I've been following it and you're doing a hell of a good job. Love what you did with the engine bay!

Usually what you're describing is caused by weak ignition coils, replace those and your engine may recover (without the cat). However, if you've been driving like that for a while, your engine is likely damaged as well. In either case, if you replace the engine, replace the ignition as well.

Do a compression test the know more about the condition of the engine.

Guys, seriously, the time you take to flame someone for not searching is sometimes more than just answering the question.

Did I flame? No, I never. I simply stated that there is answers to this ready, maybe read over what I had written. I clearly put exactly what I thought probably happened to his car. Maybe not in detail, but I obviously put not only my opinion on what could be wrong, but also suggested him viewing my thread regarding misfires, even said please. And the first part was directing him to the stickies.

So I personally did not flame. I don't believe anyone did, so please don't assume and try to make us sound bad :)

i just wanted to point out that sticky threads are wonderful but the search is almost always so inefficient that it can seem impossible to find what you want.

Loss of power, running rough, bad misfires, and takes forever to start. Hmm, sounds like someone didn't read the OP ;)

It would be wiser if you starts with small things instead of big things. Might as well just tell him to get another car. lol

Might wanna calm down, eh? I never implied his engine is gone. I said if thats the case, here is what would have happened (Thats the situation I gave to him). And to be honest, rough running, hard starting, etc., probably is the result of a blown CAT (oh, and it's glowing), as well as needing a new ignition system. I said 'new engine time' because that is what it sounds like it could possibly be to me.

Oh, let's not forget I told him to read over the misfire threads and such (Such as the one that I created for people so they would have a place to start)

Trust me, I was in the same situation in him and I knew my engine wasn't gone. I did my research, found out myself what the problems were and fixed them, so please don't undermine my knowledge. It may not be as good as some of the reputable members here, such as Ray or 9k, etc etc., but I never told him that his engine was gone - Just said that it seems like it could be a likely scenario.

BUT ANYWAYS. All childish pointing-fingers set aside, I told him to take a look at my threads, and to the OP, I still strongly recommend them. I took a lot of time and effort to compile a list of reasons, solutions, and tips for misfires. That would be a great place to start.

I will agree. The search sucks and could be better. Sometimes when I'm searching it will bring up threads completely unrelated. Besides, I see no point in flaming someone who has a problem and asks for help.

Guys I have taken no offence its only I am new to forums and dont fully understand how they work. Thanks for your comment's and Fungster your threads are informative and at least I have a direction as how to solve my problem and an understanding of what causes these problems. THANKS!
