Rough riding noise from rear tires

Does anyone notice a rough noise, well not rough, but kinda loud and doesnt seem right from the rear tires? Ill be driving above 40 mph and it seems kinda loud. Not sure if its because we have low profile tires or what. Tire pressure seems correct. Camber maybe?

The stock Potenzas in my car went noisy by 10,000 miles and were completely shot at 15,000 miles. Replaced with yokohama avs-es100, golden silence after that.

Search around in the forum -- the potenzas are reviled here. For not lasting, and for being noisy.

Hmm, damn it, lol. Im leaving for a 2100 mile move to california in a few weeks. There is still plenty of tread but perhaps ill just turn the tunes up to get rid of the sound till i get there, lol

When did you have your last four wheel alignment done?

missinmahseven 04-25-2007 04:26 PM

If the car's tracking straight, and if you've not smacked any curbs / potholes, and all four tires are wearing evenly across their tread, I wouldn't worry about alignment.

Why risk a local shop butchering the alignment, if the car drives straight and isn't chewing up the tires?

(in my experience, it takes a specialist shop, like a race-oriented shop, to do alignments right.. no dealer, no tirekingdom, no discount tire I've been to has ever aligned a car to my satisfaction. Some were *way* off and then blamed the car.)

Dumb question, but is that 4 wheel alignment covered by my mfg warranty?

Is the noise rhytmic? Like a "womp, womp, womp" noise? I have experienced this with the stock Dunlops and also with my Azenis 615s. I have no idea why it happens only at ~40 mph.

And, no, I don't believe alignment is covered under warranty.

I had an increasingly louder rumble from the rear on my '04 at about 30kmi that turned out to be a bad wheel bearing.

Warranty replacement.

Good luck.

Can you describe this "rumble"? I'm guessing it was a constant noise, varying with speed?

Exactly. It sounds like tires on the road, but my past cars didnt make this noise. it might be alignment or due to the low profile tires. but not sure. might just be the drive shaft too

Which post are you referring to? There are several different noises described.

40mph was a sweet (or not so sweet) spot for my old KDW2's as well, and to a lesser extent at 80mph. Must be something to do with noisy tires and the diameter causing some sort of resonance. I switched to Kuhmo Ecsta MXs in 245/40 (vice 225/45) and it's much quieter (but then I only have about 7k on the tires so far).

I had 2 sets of the KDW2s and I loved them, but the noise is obnoxious after 15k or so. Excellent wet tires though.

Actually now that i think about it, it sounds like a propeller from an old airplane
